Farewell to the Horse: A Cultural History
Farewell to the Horse: A Cultural History | Ulrich Raulff
5 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
A surprising, lively, and erudite history of horse and man, for readers of The Invention of Nature and The Soul of an Octopus. Horses and humans share an ancient, profoundly complex relationship. Once our most indispensable companions, horses were for millennia essential in helping build our cities, farms, and industries. But during the twentieth century, in an increasingly mechanized society, they began to disappear from human history. In this esoteric and rich tribute, award-winning historian Ulrich Raulff chronicles the dramatic story of this most spectacular creature, thoroughly examining how theyve been muses and brothers in arms, neglected and sacrificed in war yet memorialized in paintings, sculpture, and novelsand ultimately marginalized on racetracks and in pony clubs. Elegiac and absorbing, Farewell to the Horse paints a stunning panorama of a world shaped by hooves, and the imprint left on humankind. A beautiful and thoughtful exploration. . . . Farewell to the Horse is a grown-up, but also lyrical and creative, history book, and I very much enjoyed it. James Rebanks, author of the New York Times bestseller The Shepherds Life

Today is the National Day of the Horse in the United States. Remembering the economic, historic and cultural contributions of horses to our society. I still haven't read this book but I love the cover.

This cover was amazing, but the writing was not. It‘s full of pompous whining for the good old days and presents a history that is of the worst kind-self important to the author with little focus on the subject. It is less a celebration of the 🐴, an amazing creature, and more slanted history that epitomizes what‘s wrong with ivory tower academics. I wanted to read this, I wanted to like it, but it was just awful. 0/5 stars.

bookishbitch Good to know. I have this in my tbr pile. I won't rush to get to it now. It has a beautiful cover at least. 6y
