Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia
Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia | Philip Sidney
2 posts | 2 read
Basilus, a foolish old duke, consults an oracle as he imperiously wishes to know the future, but he is less than pleased with what he learns. To escape the oracle's horrific prophecies about his family and kingdom he withdraws into pastoral retreat with his wife and two daughters. When a pair of wandering princes fall in love with the princesses and adopt disguises to gain access to them, all manner of complications, both comic and serious, ensue. Part-pastoral romance, part-heroic epic, Sidney's long narrative work was hugely popular for centuries after its first publication in 1593, inspiring two sequels and countless imitations, and contributing greatly to the development of the novel. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Spent the afternoon at the State Library at their World of the Book exhibition (they‘re not Muriel Spark fans, obviously😆) and thought the servants of the #CatsofLitsy would appreciate this. At some point in the last 400 odd years, a cat has walked through some ink and then walked across this page 🐾😹

julesG 🤣🤣🤣 Sounds like something cats delight in. 14mo

I went to see Head Over Heels on Broadway today and it was PHENOMENAL! Based on Sir Philip Sidney's The Arcadia and set to music from The Go-Go's (sounds random I know, but it works), it's absolutely hysterical and completely original. So much fun! My advice - if you get the chance, go see it!! 😆

LiteraryinPA Thanks for the head‘s up! This one is completely new to me! 6y
