A Prison Diary Volume I
A Prison Diary Volume I: Hell | Jeffrey Archer
2 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
'The sun is shining through the bars of my window on what must be a glorious summer day. I've been incarcerated in a cell five paces by three for twelve and a half hours, and will not be let out again until midday; eighteen and a half hours of solitary confinement. There is a child of seventeen in the cell below me who has been charged with shoplifting - his first offence, not even convicted - and he is being locked up for eighteen and a half hours, unable to speak to anyone. This is Great Britain in the twenty-first century, not Turkey, not Nigeria, not Kosovo, but Britain.' On Thursday 19 July 2001, after a perjury trial lasting seven weeks, Jeffrey Archer was sentenced to four years in jail. He was to spend the first twenty-two days and fourteen hours in HMP Belmarsh, a double A-Category high-security prison in South London, which houses some of Britain's most violent criminals. Hell, the first volume in Archer's The Prison Diaries, is the author's daily record of the time he spent there.

Day 22 - #DearDiary #MagnificentMarch
#APrisonDiary #JeffreyArcher

This book was very interesting to see how Jeffrey Archer, upper middle class, MP, Deputy Chairman of the Tories adjusted to prison life on a day to day basis. Archer brings to light some of the changes that should be made in regards to housing the criminals with minor charges with the murderers and drug users. I enjoyed his writing style very much.

July 19, 2001, conviction for perjury, Jeffrey Archer was sentenced to 4 years in prison. On the last day of the trial, his mother dies, and the world's press accompany him to the funeral. For 22 days, Archer was locked in with a murderer & drug baron. He wrote an hour-by-hour diary of the worst 3 weeks of his life. When A Prison Diary was published in England, it was condemned by the prison authorities, and praised by the critics. #prison

Crazeedi I have enjoyed his books, how did he perjure? I guess I need to read this book! I knew he served time just don't know the story 5y
Crazeedi 4 years? Isn't that rather severe? Some thief's and murderers don't serve that much time 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi Archer became deputy chairman of the Conservative Party (1985–1986) before resigning after a newspaper accused him of paying money to a prostitute. In 1987 he won a court case and was awarded large damages because of this claim. He was made a life peer in 1992 and subsequently became Conservative candidate to be the first elected Mayor of London. He had to resign his candidacy in 1999 after it emerged that he had lied in his 1987 libel. 5y
