Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass
Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass | Mariko Tamaki
Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass is a coming-of-age story about choices, consequences, justice, fairness and progress and how a weird kid from Gotham's poorest part of town goes about defining her world for herself. From Caldecott Honor-winning author Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer, Supergirl: Being Super). Harleen is a tough, outspoken, rebellious kid who lives in a ramshackle apartment above a karaoke cabaret owned by a drag queen named MAMA. Ever since Harleen's parents split, MAMA has been her only family. When the cabaret becomes the next victim in the wave of gentrification that's taking over the neighborhood, Harleen gets mad. When Harleen decides to turn her anger into action, she is faced with two choices: join Ivy, who's campaigning to make the neighborhood a better place to live, or join The Joker, who plans to take down Gotham one corporation at a time. Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass is at once a tale of the classic Harley readers know and love, and a heartfelt story about the choices teenagers make and how they can define--or destroy--their lives. This is the first title in DC's new line of original graphic novels for middle grade and young adult readers.

I am not typically a Harley Quinn fan, but when this book won an Eisner recently I decided to try it out since I've enjoyed the other DC YA graphic novels.

This backstory gives an excellent view into the mind of a troubled young girl dealing with the loss of her home and her family. When she finds a new family that accepts her, she yet again is faced with losing everything and thus Harley Quinn is born.

I ended up really liking this one. 💚

Certainly deserving of the Eisner nomination. A very cool take on Harley Quinn's origin. Sent to Gotham City to live with her grandmother, Harley falls in with a group of queens, demands to be friends with Ivy, crossed paths with an enigmatic joker, and puts a whole lot of boogers in their place. Timely and topical, it keeps the DC spirit while offering something original.

I‘m glad to have discovered digital #comics on Hoopla because #graphicnovels are really hitting the spot for me lately. This origin story, written by the amazing Mariko Tamaki, is smart, funny & has “a lot of unresolved literary allusions.” Harleen gets her Harley Quinn persona idea from the supercool drag queens she lives with. Her social activist friend Ivy inspires her to take action… sometimes misguided but always with a good heart. #LGBTQ

This is not a story about feeling good and safe. It's lots of things, okay? But it's not that. It's also not a story about giraffes or cupcakes. Because cupcakes are just little fake cakes and do not deserve a story.

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! The cupcakes 🧁😬 5y

And yes indeed, our happy heroine Harleen was happy as a kitten on a radiator.

The Stalk from Saga (inset) looks a lot like Hello Dali‘s costume, don‘t you think? Was Harley Quinn artist Steve Pugh influenced by Saga artist Fiona Staples? #comics

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Definitely a similarity there! 5y

Had a mini graphic novel readathon this weekend. Plus a novella and a short story collection. Tagged book was the last, and my favorite, of the lot.

A great origin story for Harley Quinn. The art was cool and the main character had some details which made the normally insane personality make a little sense.

#currentlyreading This is really cool so far!! I‘m still at the very beginning where she is forming with soon the be Poison Ivy. It‘s awesome!! Side note- my psychiatrist put me on Haldol - ( finally!!) and took me off Geodon which I have been on for years but is making me gain weight. Check up on all of your depressed buddies, or reach out if you aren‘t feeling well yourself!! 👍🏽👍🏽😊😊❤️❤️💪🏽💪🏽 Here‘s sleeping #Stormy 😻😻

Mimi28 Oh, and I am trying really hard to not read it in her quirky voice in my head!! Lol 5y
Mimi28 Another side note, lol, she just did this today. I haven‘t even picked up the Haldol yet. My pharmacy could only supply a partial supply right now anyway. I have to wait until tomorrow after 3. It gets dark about 4:30pm now so that kinda sucks but I am still psyched - get it psyched!! Lol if I didn‘t learn to make myself laugh I would be here. Love you all!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️📚📚📚📚 5y
Mimi28 Wouldn‘t be here, sorry 5y

🚨 Interview Alert 🚨 Recently we had the chance to chat with Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me) about writing for graphic novels, and reimagining Harley Quinn for her latest book Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass. It was a great conversation and the book is great, too!

You can check out the interview wherever you get your podcasts or here: https://link.chtbl.com/Mariko-Tamaki

Well I tried! But there were so many sales, and coupons and finds, that my month of reading graphic novels equated to me basically reading... 4. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️The shelves are no lighter.

Wow! So it kept both the older idea I‘ve had of who Harlequin is, and define her at the same time. Her own monologue through the book adds a nice piece of who she is. Her costume change from the skimpy cheerleader outfit, thatJoker gave her to wear, to an amazing whole body red, black and white outfit we all know best was my favorite. Or that she never lost the pizazz jump in her step. Now she‘s after Joker who left her in prison-easy escape

Alright. So far tho grouping have had a very good run of DC ladies, so here Harleys graphic novel. She‘s one of those characters everyone loves that I haven‘t really understood yet. Let‘s see if this changes my view on her - crazy, passionate, twisted psychologist, turned evil by Joker emotional abuse.

I don‘t read a lot of graphic novels, but this ARC caught my attention and I‘m soooooo glad I read it. It‘s a wonderful spin on a great character, with some fun appearances from other classic Batman characters. Throw in some beautifully done commentary on societal structures and other real-world issues, and I‘m giving this one a solid 10/10.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (due to length of excerpt) Thanks to NetGalley I received an early excerpt of this graphic novel. We are introduced to Harleen Quinzel who goes to live with her grandma- only her grandma has died so she is now living in an apartment with a drag queen who goes by Mama. We also get a chance to see how Harleen becomes friends with Ivy. The excerpt is only 28 pages but I am excited to read the remaining novel when it is released next year.

RadicalReader @bibli0phagist still hard to believe Harleen Quinzel Became Harley Quinn just somehow mind blowing (edited) 6y
bibli0phagist @RadicalReader Despite Harley Quinn being one of my favorite characters I don‘t know much about her origin story, so I‘m very excited to read the rest of this. Although idk if I can wait a year and might have to seek other resources. 😂 6y
RadicalReader @bibli0phagist happens when books and comics get you absorbed in them like they have a tendency to do 6y
