The Virginian; a Horseman of the Plains
The Virginian; a Horseman of the Plains | Owen Wister
18 posts | 18 read | 9 to read
The western is one of Americas most important and influential contributions to world culture. And it was Owen Wisters The Virginian, first published in 1902, that created the familiar archetypes of character, setting, and action that still dominate western fiction and film. The Virginian's characters include: The hero, tall, taciturn, and unflappable, confident in his skills, careful of his honor, mysterious in his background; the heroine, the schoolmarm from the East, dedicated to civilizing the untamed town, but willing to adapt to its waysup to a point; and the villain, who is a liar, a thief, a killer, and worst of all, a coward beneath his bluster. Its settingthe lonely small town in the midst of the vast, empty, dangerous but overwhelmingly beautiful landscapeplays so crucial a role that it may be regarded as one of the primary characters. And its actionthe cattle roundup, the capture of the rustlers, the agonizing moral choices demanded by western justice, and the climactic shoot-out between hero and villainshaped the plots of the thousands of books and movies that followed.

This weeks audio. Funny, heroic, moral and romantic. The first of its kind. The forerunner of the Western genre that romanticizes the loner cowboy. Loved it. My 16 year old who thinks he can only stand to read dystopian or horror liked it too. Story of a Wyoming cowboy as he fights the bad guys and wins the heart of his lady 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴

Bookzombie Great review! Also reminds me that I think this is on my Kindle. 5y

Highly considering picking up "The Virginian" before anyone else does. This is one of my favorite western shows, and I wanna read the book so bad!

This novel, published in 1902, is considered the first “western”.

Good thing Owen Wister had an unbearably tedious job in banking back in 1885. It drove him to retreat to a ranch in Wyoming each year where he penciled precise details in his diaries about the West and its people. From these notes he created the first true fictional #western ever written. Plus he coined the phrase:When you call me that, SMILE.😊He even looks like the Virginian! Loved the descriptive writing and western drawl dialogue.

This seemed a more romantic version of Lonesome Dove. Not as much action but some of the same feelings. The Virginian is a man of few words, high principles, and deep thoughts. #LitsyClassics #V #17 #2018christyread

Would anyone in the western part of Virginia like to do a meet-up sometime this summer? I live in Abingdon but could do a day trip as far as Roanoke. Feel free to tag any Virginian littens who might be interested.

Laalaleighh I live 30 minutes from Roanoke. Let me know when y'all do this! (edited) 8y
