The Book of the Dun Cow
The Book of the Dun Cow | Walter Wangerin Jr.
3 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
Walter Wangerin's profound fantasy concerns a time when the sun turned around the earth and the animals could speak, when Chauntecleer the Rooster ruled over a more or less peaceful kingdom. What the animals did not know was that they were the Keepers of Wyrm, monster of evil long imprisoned beneath the earth ... and Wyrm, sub terra, was breaking free.

Pickpick

Book Club this month decided that we would all choose a former National Book Award winner. I decided to pick the weirdest thing on the list, and a story inspired by Chaucer where farm animals unite to defeat evil, seemed like the right choice. It was a fun departure from my comfort zone. It did feel a bit too clever at times, which took me out of the story a bit, but overall, I‘m glad that I gave it a chance.

MayJasper Sounds interesting 😊👍 6y

Four Calling Birds for #12DaysofChristmas

All TBR except The Book of the Dun Cow which you should really probably read. It‘s an epic tale of good versus evil with brutal battles, romance, and betrayal, featuring a cast entirely composed of farm animals.

Jabberwocky I struggled so much with Spirit gate! Hope it works out better for you! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Jaberwocky Totally picked it up for that cool cover. Who knows when I‘ll get to it! 7y
RealBooks4ever Omg, I've never run into another person who loves The Book of Dun Cow! We read it in a book group and no-one else liked it! Needless to say, I didn't last long in that group! 💜💜💜 I love that story! 7y
LibrarianRyan I will be adding it to my list. 7y

I bought this book for my brother and it's a big hit. He was a big fan of Rock-A-Doodle as a kid, which has a very different Chauntecleer the rooster as a singing star. Any other fans of the book or movie?

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Just read the book last year and it was stunning. Definitely in for the rest of the trilogy. 7y
