Courts of Love: The Story of Eleanor of Aquitaine
Courts of Love: The Story of Eleanor of Aquitaine | Jean Plaidy
6 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
When I look back over my long and tempestuous life, I can see that much of what happened to me--my triumphs and most of my misfortunes--was due to my passionate relationships with men. I was a woman who considered herself their equal--and in many ways their superior--but it seemed that I depended on them, while seeking to be the dominant partner--an attitude which could hardly be expected to bring about a harmonious existence. Eleanor of Aquitaine was revered for her superior intellect, extraordinary courage, and fierce loyalty. She was equally famous for her turbulent relationships, which included marriages to the kings of both France and England. As a child, Eleanor reveled in her beloved grandfather's Courts of Love, where troubadours sang of romantic devotion and passion filled the air. In 1137, at the age of fifteen, Eleanor became Duchess of Aquitaine, the richest province in Europe. A union with Louis VII allowed her to ascend the French throne, yet he was a tepid and possessive man and no match for a young woman raised in the Courts of Love. When Eleanor met the magnetic Henry II, the first Plantagenet King of England, their stormy pairing set great change in motion--and produced many sons and daughters, two of whom would one day reign in their own right. In this majestic and sweeping story, set against a backdrop of medieval politics, intrigue, and strife, Jean Plaidy weaves a tapestry of love, passion, betrayal, and heartbreak--and reveals the life of a most remarkable woman whose iron will and political savvy enabled her to hold her own against the most powerful men of her time.

This was good. It was long, but Eleanor lived a long life. I have read one or two books about her, but it‘s been a while, and I don‘t recall the stories of Thomas a Becket and Richard the Lionheart, which Plaidy included in her book here. (Becket was a friend of Henry‘s and Richard was Eleanor and Henry‘s son.) Cont in comments...

LibraryCin They were likely there, but maybe I just didn‘t know who they were when I read about them originally, so the stories didn‘t “stick” in my memory. Plaidy is very detailed with her history, and that is to be commended, but it doesn‘t always make for the most interesting fiction. Even so, overall, I liked it. 1y

I think this is the beginning of the Plantagenets-of course I need to do some double checking, of course it‘s the same with these kings and their “favorites” and I guess always has been ; I put this down for a while because it is a bit slow but I want to take a break from mad Henry VIII before I continue with that series

Scochrane26 Have you read The Summer Queen, the Winter Crown, & the Autumn Throne? I still haven‘t read the 3rd, but it‘s a good trilogy about Eleanor. 5y
Lauraandherbooks @Scochrane26 no I didn‘t know there was a trilogy!! But thank you - now I will have to find them - her story is interesting but this book doesn‘t deliver on what it could be ... it‘s a bit dry 5y
Scochrane26 @Lauraandherbooks I keep forgetting to read the 3rd one, it wasn‘t out when I read the others. I really like them—same time as Phillipa Gregory books. 5y
Lauraandherbooks @Scochrane26 i really enjoy this genre so I‘m happy to find another trilogy 😃 5y

What is she doing with my book??? I‘m supposed to fall asleep reading 🤣🥰

Crazeedi I tried to read a different book by this author but found it not very good. And I love reading this tome period 5y
Lauraandherbooks @Crazeedi this is the first book by this author I have read and the time period is my interest but unfortunately I am trudging thru this book slowly, I find it very easy to put it down even after 1 page so this is unfortunate- I‘m determined to get through it but it‘s going to take awhile 5y
