Believe
Believe: Boxing, Olympics and my life outside the ring | Nicola Adams
5 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
At London 2012, Nicola Adams made history. The flyweight boxer - nicknamed the smiling assassin - became the first ever woman to win an Olympic Gold medal for boxing. In Rio 2016, with the nation cheering her on, she did it all over again. Growing up in Leeds, Nicola stumbled into boxing in her local sports centre while her mum was at aerobics. Age 13 she decided that she would win an Olympic Gold: nobody was going to stop her. Years of relentless training, fundraising and determination have seen Nicola battle through injury, prejudice and defeat to become one of Britain best-loved athletes and an inspiration to all those who are chasing after a seemingly impossible dream.

Pickpick

If you‘re after a book about self-belief, determination and hard work, you could do a lot worse. This covers Nicola Adams‘ childhood, the route to her boxing career, the Olympics, fame, & her personal life. It‘s optimistic, up-beat & positive, even through the rough patches (there are a several, covered in varying degrees of detail). A pick for sheer force of personality!

A street sign from yesterday‘s audiowalk, and finished this audiobook. So windy - I didn‘t last long!

Right, let‘s do Friday! #litsywalkers

Missed weekend #litsywalkers while Storm Freya did her thing 💨💨💦🌊💨💨! But today‘s walk made up for it, taking me to a circuits class, which I surprisingly enjoyed. Mid-life-crisis? Moi??! (Only possible explanation 😐).

Anyhow, this is my current audio. Nicola Adams is (and apparently always has been) a very strong-minded, determined lady. She‘s not had it easy, but it‘s nice/unusual to read a celeb memoir with so little ‘poor me‘ about it.

An hour walk, and something #unusual for #litsywalkers - a WWII mine converted into a collection box for the Shipwrecked Mariners Society. Weird might be a better description than unusual 🤔.

And started a new audiobook. I find Nicola Adams fascinating- I don‘t understand boxing at all. But I find her enthusiasm and positivity so engaging. So far the book‘s a bit all over the show, but she‘s such a character, I think it‘ll be an interesting read.

Mitch Ahh... lovely part of the world. We used to holiday there every summer staying in our caravan in the car park of my uncles pub! Fond memories. Our house, when I was little, was named Teign House to remind us of our summers! ❤️ (edited) 6y
rockpools @Mitch That‘s so cool! Does your uncle‘s pub still exist? 6y
Mitch @RachelO it does.. My auntie has retired to Dawlish and my Uncle has passed away but the pubs still there - The Royal Oak Inn at Ideford. 6y

Kaye Very neat picture 6y
rockpools @Mitch Sorry to hear about your uncle. I think Dawlish would be a great place to retire to - there‘s so much going on there! And wow, that‘s a proper Devon country pub - lovely memories! ❤️ 6y
