During Fiesta, three desperate men converge in a perilous New Mexico town It takes four days for Sailor to travel to New Mexico by bus. He arrives broke, sweaty, and ready to get whats his. Its the annual Fiesta, and the locals burn an effigy of Zozobra so that their troubles follow the mythical character into the fire. But for former senator Willis Douglass, trouble is just beginning. Sailor was Williss personal secretary when his wife died in an apparent robbery-gone-wrong. Only Sailor knows it was Willis who ordered her murder, and hes agreed to keep his mouth shut in exchange for a little bit of cash. On Sailors tail is a cop who wants the senator for more than a payoff. As Fiesta rages on, these three men will circle one another in a dance of death, as they chase truth, money, and revenge.

Pickpick

This was interesting to read immediately after Vultures in the Sky, by Todd Downing (also an American Mystery Classics reprint); they have similar settings and hot, stifling atmospheres. This book is more of a suspenseful character study, though, whereas Vultures is a closed-circle mystery.

First line: “He came in on the five o‘clock bus.”
This is mid-century noir, and I‘ve really liked the other two books I‘ve read by this author, so I think I‘m going to enjoy this one. @ShyBookOwl #FirstLineFridays

arubabookwoman Hmmm.... I used the square format on my iPhone to take the picture (at least I think I did), but the top still got cut off. Any other suggestions about what I'm doing wrong? Will try again tomorrow. @LeahBergen 5y
LeahBergen 🤔 When you opened your camera on your phone, did you slide it (on the bottom of the screen) from “PHOTO” to “SQUARE” before taking your photo? It should be giving you a screen that fits this Litsy one when you take photos. 5y
