Cake and Punishment
Cake and Punishment: A Southern Cake Baker Mystery | Maymee Bell
7 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
In the first of a delectable new Southern-set baking cozy series, Sophia Cummings, pastry chef extraordinaire, must craft the perfect cake for an old friend’s wedding while sifting through the suspects in a murder. Bucolic Rumford, Kentucky has glowing fields of bluegrass, a fine selection of bourbons, and now a professional pastry chef. Broken-hearted Sophia Cummings has come home from New York City. She’s not there a minute before she’s charmed into making her high school friend Charlotte’s wedding cake. The kitchen at the Rumford Country Club seems perfect until Chef Emile’s body is discovered, sprawled near the stove, a cast iron skillet on the floor close by. With one look at the shiny, new frying pan, Sophia knows it’s not Emile’s. She offers her knowledge to Sheriff Carter and her talents to Evelyn, the manager, who needs an interim chef. The mood in the country club is grim: Emile’s peppery personality had burned members and staff alike. Sophia wonders which one of them burned him? Perfect for fans of Joanne Fluke and JoAnna Carl, Cake and Punishment—with authentic Southern recipes!—will satisfy your sweet tooth.

I didn‘t love this as much as the spice isle bakery series of cosy mysteries, so it felt like a bit of a cosy mystery step down in some ways, but it feels unfair to compare it to the best cosy mysteries I think I‘ve ever read. This was quite ‘by the book‘ with quite a simple mystery but I had a great time and I loved the Kentucky setting a lot. The author wrote the town so well.

I'm behind on my #cozymysterybookclub reads but found last month's book on Hoopla. So far it's nothing special but it features baking so I'm here for the noms.

Last food & book post today. My friend is an excellent baker & sent me a little care package of her mini pecan pies (my favorites), the pumpkin-pecan bread she wanted me to try (because it's "not too pumpkin-y & not nutmeg-y") & coconut marshmallows (that are pretty amazing). With a culinary cozy mystery from the library--I got the 2nd book in the series from NetGalley & wanted to read book #1 first. ??

I am on target to finish these by or before their publication date.

rockpools I've discovered I'd have slightly more chance of doing this if I knew what the month was before I hit the request button. Oops! 😑 7y
