A generation ship left earth 500 years ago. Now damaged, it is filled with modified humans, angels, demons, and a manufactured religion. The warring factions must be united to repower the ship before the star goes nova. A young angel named Sir Perceval and her sister Rien are in the center of the war to retake the ship. A mix of biblical and Arthurian imagery, which mostly works but is sometimes jarring. Probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it

Elizabeth Bear always throws her readers in at the deep end. This is a weird book with lots of moving parts and little direct explanation of how anything works, and it sure ain‘t for everyone. Me, I felt invited to dig in and enjoy the ride as the characters discover the inner workings of their stalled generation ship with its Arthurian social structure and fascinating tech. I had a blast with it and wish I could go straight into CHILL.

Today I had some spare time and a growing awareness of how quickly the temperature‘s dropping; ie, an 8.25-mile #audiowalk was inevitable. Gotta squeeze in as much outdoor time as I can while it‘s still decent out.

wanderinglynn How lovely! Was this on your walk? 5y
xicanti @wanderinglynn it was! It‘s in a riverbend park I really like but don‘t get to visit very often. 5y
Crazeedi Lovely view while walking!! 5y

xicanti @Crazeedi I took this shot from some stepping stones that go across the little stream that flows down from this waterfall. The whole area‘s beautiful! 5y
Crazeedi @xicanti you're very lucky! 5y
alisiakae And I have the opposite problem, impatiently waiting until the summer weather backs off so I can have some decent walking weather, and not end up in a puddle of sweat. 😂😂 5y
xicanti @4thhouseontheleft I would always, always rather sweat than shiver. 5y
alisiakae @xicanti Same! That‘s one thing I like where I live, I never really shiver in winter, at least not compared to where I grew up in the northeast! 5y
xicanti @4thhouseontheleft lucky! I do nothing but shiver here from the start of autumn to the end of spring. 5y

Sock progress, filtered so you can see the pattern a bit better. I‘ve moved the needles around now I‘m into the gusset.

I‘ve been listening to DUST while I plug away. It‘s another I‘m rereading on audio so I can finally finish the series, and I‘ve fallen for it all over again. It‘s weird and cool and confusing in all the best ways, and it‘s one of the rare Arthurian things I genuinely like. #audioknitting

ferskner That ombre is to die for! 5y
xicanti @ferskner I fell in love with it the moment I saw it! It‘s by a Swedish (I think) yarn company called Marks & Kattens. 5y
Catsandbooks Beautiful color! Socks are looking wonderful! ❤️ 5y
xicanti @Catsandbooks this pattern is a lot of fun to work on. 5y

Incredibly interesting but ultimately so confusing and flowery that I was annoyed.

Next up in my sff by women end of winter marathon, Dust! I LOVE The idea of a broken generational ship as a whole world to the people living and dying on it, divided into it's own regions and big enough that it must really be a world in and of itself. I'm only 40 pages in and still getting the feel of worldbuilding but I'm so intrigued, it's a beautiful marriage of sci fi and fantasy themes.

My favourite off-planet story? My answer might change from day to day but today I'm going with this epic story of a ruling family on a broken generation ship.

This was a random used bookstore find that turned out quite magical. Broken angels, a derelict colony ship, a fractured AI, and a sun on the verge of destroying it all made for a book I couldn't put down. It was definitely #awholenewworld for #jubilantjuly!

"Who the hell puts bats on a spaceship?"
Excellent question...
