so-so2.5/5⭐ So many themes, but they didn't grow the characters. The exception is some minor growth regarding Bullet's racism. So many stereotypes, not just in his POV but narratively.
Bullet is also an arrogant jerk in other ways. His thoughts of superiority are off-putting.
It was nice to get an inside view of this timeline in the overall history of the Tillermans, particularly Abigail.

pickBullet is hard to like, but his story is very good. He reminds me of Bartleby, who would prefer not to.
Bullet is a HS junior in 1968, with integration and Vietnam changing everything. If you‘ve read Dicey‘s Song you know the end, but the other 220 pages are new. We see Abigail as a wife (to a horrid man) and get our first glimpse of Liza‘s man.
TW: the dog dies, which wasn‘t a surprise.

Next up for #MiddleGradeMarch is the fourth Tillerman Cycle book. I realized that four of my last seven reads have been violent or dealt with abusive parents (Free Lunch and Stepping on the Cracks), and now this book has a crappy father who‘s manipulative and cruel if not physically abusive. After this it‘s time for something lighter!
pickA well-written book about a know-it-all teenager in 1967 Maryland. Lots of things covered here- integration, Vietnam, and poverty, to name a few. Bullet is not the most likeable main character, but seeing his beliefs and attitude change over the course of the story really show what a gifted writer Cynthia Voigt is. I'm happy I reread this for #booked2018 and #deweysreadathon.
Next up for me is a read for #Booked2018, under the category Childhood Favorite. I LOVED Cynthia Voigt when I was in middle school, and I've probably read this 20 times. Note that I "borrowed" this book from my seventh grade Reading teacher, Ms Wood. ?? Sorry Ms Wood!!
