MG novel in verse - 1939. Daniel‘s parents put him on a ship westward to escape Jewish persecution. He meets Paloma who hides from her greedy father in her dovecote. They make music together and help the refugees adjust. I never knew about Holocaust refugees living in Cuba. I‘ve really enjoyed delving into Cuban history through Engle‘s books.

This 2 hour audiobook with multiple POVs, mostly a young Cuban teen and teenage Jewish refugee, shares hardships during the Holocaust that are rarely taught and is a good introduction on refugees. Would be a a great addition to middle grade classroom libraries. #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime

#DearDecember Day 17: This one has a #TropicalSetting. Iphigene‘s review: “I knew that reading Tropical Secrets was going to be tough on me, add the fact this was my first Novel in Verse I wasn‘t sure what the experience would be. If I were to describe my experience in one word it would be crescendo - defined as a gradual increase in volume. Tropical Secrets began slowly & built its way up in the emotional scale of things.” https://wp.me/pDlzr-4Qb

What a poetic way of describing the “son cubano.” I think my afternoon will be spent listening to the old Cuban songs my mom used to play when I was a child.

Next up on my #novelsinverse journey....
This one is timely in that my 8 graders are exploring the Holocaust this month and I‘ve been checking out lots on the subject. I think I‘m going to learn something with this one.
