After his dad commits suicide, Will tries to overcome his own misery by secretly helping the people around him in this exquisitely crafted story made up of one hundred chapters of one hundred words each, by award-winning and bestselling author Alison McGhee. Sixteen-year-old Will spends most of his days the same way: Working at the Dollar Only store, trying to replicate his late father’s famous cornbread recipe, and walking the streets of Los Angeles. Will started walking after his father committed suicide, and three years later he hasn’t stopped. But there are some places Will can’t walk by: The blessings store with the chest of 100 Chinese blessings in the back, the bridge on Fourth Street where his father died, and his childhood friend Playa’s house. When Will learns Playa was raped at a party—a party he was at, where he saw Playa, and where he believes he could have stopped the worst from happening if he hadn’t left early—it spurs Will to stop being complacent in his own sadness and do some good in the world. He begins to leave small gifts for everyone in his life, from Superman the homeless guy he passes on his way to work, to the Little Butterfly Dude he walks by on the way home, to Playa herself. And it is through those acts of kindness that Will is finally able to push past his own trauma and truly begin to live his life again. Oh, and discover the truth about that cornbread.

I love that I found this book on a shelf, it is such a simple and powerful with it‘s words. The punctuation was on point and all the details I love, each page has only 100 words and the cover is unique, that is what caught my eye.

I was reading this book last week and I can‘t say I love it but it‘s pretty good. I think the story is good I just don‘t like the setup. This book has exactly 100 words on each page out of 199. It‘s about a guy who lost his dad and walks all day to avoid truth. He also has a friend that went through something traumatic and he try‘s to help her get through it by getting her little presents from his job. Over all I think it‘s a good book

This book I would say is realistic fiction. I give it a 4-5. Will walks. He starts at home goes to school then goes to work then he goes to bed the repeat. He walks the one day in and the next day out. He does nice things for people whenever he can. But when the universe places unexpected detours in his path, will needs to learn how to face his problems instead of running away from them.

Cfischbuch How did you like the format of the book? 5y

Oh my gosh! I read reviews about this book a few times so it‘s been on my radar awhile. I‘m SO GLAD I finally got to it!

The image (pg. 198) is Mandarin for 100.

Will is grieving his father; his best friend was raped at a party shortly after he left.

He walks. He leaves gifts for those he meets.

100 chapters; 100 words/chapter

This book was sad, but still great! If you want a short and fast read, This one is for you. This book has 100 words per page with 100 pages. The pacing for me was fast. Really nice book! I would rate this a 9/10.

Work has been too much, I've taken ill, so what I leave behind for #startreksummerjune is the posts I missed. However, I feel like the crew of Deep Space Nine would accept this failure.

I've said it before, but DS9 is my favorite Trek. It is my fictional home more than any other fake location. It's beautiful and flawed and I'm very glad it exists. I'm glad I can go there and hang with these weirdos. I can always come home.
