The Female Brain
The Female Brain | Louann Brizendine
5 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
In this groundbreaking book, Dr Louann Brizendine describes the uniquely flexible structure of the female brain and its constant, dynamic state of change - the key difference that separates it from that of the male - and reveals how women think, what they value, how they communicate, and whom they'll love. She also reveals the neurological explanations behind why... * A woman remembers fights that a man insists never happened... * Thoughts about sex enter a woman's brain perhaps once every couple of days, but mayenter a man's brain up to once every minute... * A woman's brain goes on high alert during pregnancy - and stays that way long after giving birth... * A woman over 50 is more likely to initiate divorce than a man... * Women tend to know what people are feeling, while men can't spot an emotion unless someone cries or threatens them with bodily harm! Accessible, fun and compelling, and based on more than three decades of research, The Female Brain will help women to better understand themselves - and the men in their lives.

Another half-finished, pre-review thing:
1) I haven't read her follow-up on the male brain but I can already tell you they should have been one book.
2) I recognize that books like this basically require generalizations, but it becomes glaring on the occasional instances she acknowledges a spectrum of behavior, or uses “likely“ or “probably“ in asserting causality.
3) Shrinks need to realize when they use patient anecdotes in their books…(cont'd)

alexa_d …there's a hell of a selection bias going on. They're dealing with (especially in the chapter on puberty) the more disruptive extremes of behavior. When it comes to people who don't need therapy, you can't actually say how many of them don't because they can manage their impulses vs. because they don't actually have those impulses, and thus the existence of said impulses can not be universalized. (edited) 5y
alexa_d If this book had more straight neuroscience and without the (limited, see 1) comparisons between “male“ and “female“ brains, this could be a really interesting book. Yes, we know that AFAB and AMAB people have differing amounts of hormones. How X hormones in Y proportion “mechanically“ affect the brain, and how that *may* be linked to Z human behavior, would be very interesting and without the distractions of “Mars/Venus“ generalizations. 5y

Kaye Alright. I can‘t resist. Which one is THICKER ? 7y
TheBookgeekFrau @Kaye lol well, book-wise The Female Brain. When I got to the end of The Male Brain I felt I was on Candid Camera or something, like it was a joke at how short it was😂 7y
Kaye Well, just as a long- time Observer..... without anything other than my eyes and ears to give me this impression, you could sum up the male brain in one chapter. The female would take about 6 volumes of an encyclopedia. Even though I‘m female, it‘s very hard to figure us out. Men are pretty simple-minded. And I mean that in a GOOD way. They‘re very easy to figure out. (edited) 7y

TheBookgeekFrau @Kaye I whole-heartedly agree with you, which is why the majority of my friends have always been male (I‘m female) 😊 7y
Kaye You are one smart cookie.I think men have the ability to be better friends because they lack the cattiness that most females have. I‘ve never heard a man remark about something another man wears. They don‘t give a crap about those sorts of things. They‘re fascinating to listen to. They talk about such mundane things, but can go on for hours about them.. They dont gossip, spread rumors, stab each other in the back. A man would be like a trusted dog (edited) 7y
Alfoster @Kaye So true! I swear I‘m not stalking you! I just find your comments hilarious! We must be around the same age!😍 7y

I was very surprised. Normally I am not a fan of nonfiction, but this book is very interesting. It seems to be making a well thought out, through argument and has educated me on differences between the male brain and the female brain, proving that they are indeed very different.
