Scotland: A Very Short Introduction
Scotland: A Very Short Introduction | Rab Houston
5 posts | 1 read
Since Devolution in 1999 Scotland has become a focus of intense interest both within Britain and throughout the wider world. In this Very Short Introduction, Rab Houston explores how an independent Scottish nation emerged in the Middle Ages, how it was irrevocably altered by Reformation, links with England and economic change, and how Scotland influenced the development of the modern world. Examining politics, law, society, religion, education, migration, and culture, he examines how the nation's history has made it distinct from England, both before and after Union, how it overcame internal tensions between Highland and Lowland society, and how it has today arrived at a political, social and culture watershed. Authoritative, lucid, and ranging widely over issues of environment, people, and identity, this is Scotland's story without myths: an ideal introduction for those interested in the Scots, but also a balanced yet refreshing challenge to those who already feel at home in Scotland past and present. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Looking for book recommendations!

Planning a trip to Scotland and would love to read and learn more about this amazing county. I know and love Outlander, but what else??? Fiction or non-fiction welcome!

Also, have you been there? What should we be sure not to miss?

MrBook @LornaDH lives there! She may have some tips for you 😁. She's an aMAZing Litten 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! 7y
HeatherBookNerd Here‘s a recent Book Riot post about Scotland that may be of interest. https://bookriot.com/2018/06/17/literary-tourism-scotland/ 7y
GingerAntics Weird Scotland is always fun. If you‘re a huge fan of Outlander, I‘d stay away from history books (they‘ll ruin it for you). How the Scots Invented the Modern World is also a fun read. That‘s pretty Outlander safe. Then there is always Scotland‘s Bard if you‘re a fan of poetry. I‘m trying to remember the names of the books with the mythology in it. Those are a lot of fun, too. 7y

andrew61 There is loads of brilliant crime fiction from Scotland but that may be a bit grim if you are on holiday. If you've read ian banks his novels are interesting and his travel book around the whisky distilleries is really good 7y
Ardachy I lived in Scotland for over four years and still hadn‘t seen everything I wanted to. I agree with @GingerAntics and @andrew61 . The Alexander McCall Smith Scotland Street series would make a great Scottish holiday read or any Christopher Brookmyre if you like dark humour. 7y
rabbitprincess I second the recs for Mr Mac and Me and for Chris Brookmyre. I particularly like Brookmyre's Jasmine Sharp trilogy, which begins with 7y
GingerAntics I would actually stay away from the tagged book. It‘s a really great, really short, concise history with all the necessities, but on one page alone about half of Outlander will be proven impossible, so I wouldn‘t go there. It‘s a great little book, but probably not a good idea for your purposes. 7y
minkyb Inspector John Rebus is a great series. 7y
YouReadMyEyes @HeatherBookNerd This Book Riot post is awesome, thank you so much! 7y
YouReadMyEyes @GingerAntics @CouronneDhiver @CarolynM @andrew61 @Ardachy @rabbitprincess @minkyb Thank you all so much for your recommendations 😊 I‘m so excited to look these up and see if I can find at the used bookstore or online. I really like Outlander, but have only read the first book (and watched Season 1). I enjoy the cultural history more than the political. 7y
YouReadMyEyes @MrBook Thanks 😁 I love how Litsy connects us all from far and wide 7y

#TrivialThursday fun!

1. I‘m REALLY anxious in cars, but not planes. Figure that one out. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also, flying is just more efficient while traveling.

2. I‘ve only been once, but Scotland. Always. 💙

3. Going to Chincoteague for a couple days this summer with my husband and then to the Catskills for a week in October!
