Lives of the Poets
Lives of the Poets | Michael Schmidt
2 posts | 1 read | 14 to read
National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist In this stunning volume of epic breadth, Michael Schmidt connects the lives and works of more than 300 poets over the last 700 years--spanning distant shores from Scotland to Australia to the Caribbean, all sharing the English language. Schmidt reveals how each poet has transformed "a common language of poetry" into the rustic rhythms and elegiac ballads, love sonnets, and experimental postmodern verse that make up our lyrical canon. A comprehensive guided tour that is lively and always accessible, Lives of the Poets illuminates our most transcendent literary tradition. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This might be a little late, but I couldn't let #poetry talk go by without mentioning Lives of the Poets again! If you want to read a TON of short, snarky biographies that puts poetry in a cultural and historical context, this is wonderful. Also pictured: Wendell Berry, who I rediscovered and loved all over again in 2016, and my main dude Robinson Jeffers, whose poems of apocalyptic grief and stark nature are profoundly relevant.

#AugustPhotoChallenge ! My last year of school, I took a really intense intro to Anglophone poetry class. It was one of the hardest classes I took in college, and looking back, I can see how it had a profound impact on me. My poetry collection expanded, and poetry is a regular part of my reading diet. I highly recommend the tagged book - it's fun, occasionally snarky, and puts poetry in a meaningful historical context. And read Robinson Jeffers!
