#ReadAway2024 #ForTheLoveofBooks

Read last night for August‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2024 I couldn‘t readily find a copy of this little book first published in 1946, but I was able to find the PDF to read on my phone. I hadn‘t heard of this book before but I enjoyed it. No one should be able to tell bear (or us) who we are. 🐻💛

TheSpineView Well done! 1w
LiteraryinLawrence I read this book for the first time recently. It was strange! 7d

Well, that was just delightful!! Nobody gets to tell you who you are. You get to decide that for yourself. And again, I miss having my own classroom because this would‘ve led to some great discussions. Thanks Christine, great choice.

TheBookHippie ♥️♥️🐻♥️♥️ I loved it too! I agree such a good classroom book! 1mo

What I love about #ChildrensClassicRead2024 is being introduced to new books and new authors. Prior to this months pick I had never heard of this title. A wonderful little story about so many ideas but ultimately about being true to yourself.

TheBookHippie I love this bear!!! ♥️🐻 I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying the reads! 1mo

Thank you, @TheBookHippie for choosing this for #childrensclassicread2024
I read it to two 3 yo and they loved it. They wanted to know why no one would listen to the bear. They didn‘t like everyone telling the bear who he was. I hope they keep those convictions.

TheBookHippie ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🐻♥️♥️♥️♥️ it‘s such a good story and lesson! I‘m so glad they understood ! Everyone I read it to loves it- including teens! 1mo

Another great #buddyread
How can you prevent others from persuading you wrongly?
My 4 yo granddaughters enjoyed this book- they were quite adamant with all of the adults that he 🐻 wasn‘t a human!! Hopefully they can hang onto this confidence as they get older.

That feeling when you have to keep repeating to yourself 'everything will be okay, it's a children's book'. 🫣 Something about having your identity challenged or restricted by bureaucracy or workplace is a bit traumatic to read. Oh, and then there's the through line of developed wild space and animals in captivity! 😶‍🌫️The art is wonderful, as is the ending. ♥️

So this blurb is a reason I picked this book⬇️

“This book can be used to teach philosophy to children because it discusses the overall concept of self-identity. Throughout the book, Tashlin describes a process similar to when people do not recognize what is different and unique about certain individuals and they then attach labels to those individuals. “

And two books for ME! For my NYRB Children‘s collection and my Gorey collection. I was way too excited to find these, but that‘s what thrift stores are for - the thrilling unexpected finds that bring you joy for a buck seventy-five. 😁
