God: A Biography
God: A Biography | Jack Miles
2 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE What sort of "person" is God? What is his "life story"? Is it possible to approach him not as an object of religious reverence, but as the protagonist of the world's greatest book—as a character who possesses all the depths, contradictions, and abiguities of a Hamlet? This is the task that Jack Miles—a former Jesuit trained in religious studies and Near Eastern languages—accomplishes with such brilliance and originality in God: A Biography. Using the Hebrew Bible as his text, Miles shows us a God who evolves through his relationship with man, the image who in time becomes his rival. Here is the Creator who nearly destroys his chief creation; the bloodthirsty warrior and the protector of the downtrodden; the lawless law-giver; the scourge and the penitent. Profoundly learned, stylishly written, the resulting work illuminates God and man alike and returns us to the Bible with a sense of discovery and wonder.

Reposting for @barbwire Who here has read this? Ms. Atwood made it sound fascinating.

LibrarianRyan I have a copy. Not my thing but my guy is reading it. 5y
Lcsmcat @LibrarianRyan @barbwire What‘s his opinion? 5y
Aimeesue I have read a lot of it, but haven't finished it. It's definitely work at times, but it was interesting to see the evolution. But I'm a Unitarian Universalist atheist, so may not be the best judge. 5y
Lcsmcat @Aimeesue Oh I think, given the premise of studying God as one would study a character, that makes you an excellent judge. 5y
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat Fair point! Revised opinion: It was very interesting, but it helps if you have some knowledge of the Bible (I was raised in a Christian church, so Check!) I still found some of it hard going, and I felt like I had gotten most of the major points, so was not disposed to continue reading. 😋 (edited) 5y

God: A Biography | Jack Miles

Hello, Littens! I‘m conducting a quick poll here: have any of you read this book, and if so, would you recommend it? Margaret Atwood did when @Lcsmcat and I saw her last night at North Carolina State University, but I‘m interested to know what y‘all think. Thanks in advance!
