Cult X | Fuminori Nakamura

The magnum opus by Akutagawa Prize-winner Fuminori Nakamura, Cult X is a story that dives into the psychology of fringe religion, obsession, and social disaffection. When Toru Narazaki's girlfriend, Ryoko, disappears, he tries to track her down, despite the warnings of a private detective he's hired to find her. Ryoko's past is shrouded in mystery, but the one concrete clue to her whereabouts is a previous address where she lived: in a compound in the heart of Tokyo, with a group that seems to be a cult led by a charismatic guru with a revisionist Buddhist scheme of life, death, and society. Narazaki plunges into the secretive world of the cult, ready to expose himself to any of the guru's brainwashing tactics if it means he can learn the truth about Ryoko. But the cult isn't what he expected, and he has no idea of the bubbling violence beneath its surface. Inspired by the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, Cult X is an exploration of what draws individuals into extremism. This multi-faceted novel is nothing less than a tour de force, capturing the connections between astrophysics, neuroscience, and religion. It is an invective against predatory corporate consumerism and exploitative geopolitics, and it is a love story about compassion in the face of nihilism.

Bailedbailed

My first DNF for the year. I‘ve been stuck at 46% for some time now (skipping pages) and just can‘t pick it up again. I‘m disappointed as I‘ve previously enjoyed his books like The Thief. While a fascinating topic (cults), there were too many pages of tedious lectures by the male characters.

Megabooks Sometimes you‘ve just gotta bail! 2y
RealLifeReading @Megabooks it just always feels so hard to do that though! 2y

Whhaaatttt?? Just made it to 100 pages in and still trying to figure this one out. Religion, brain washing, physics. It makes you curious enough to keep reading though.

“Humans can generally be divided into two categories regarding their response to trauma. There are those who can savor it. They use it to change themselves and can enjoy that experience. The others just shut down. They protect themselves by not thinking deeply about it. Being shaken to your core is stressful, either way. Which type do you think you are?”

Mehso-so

This book is interesting. It was written after the 95 sarin gas attacks in Tokyo and it‘s about a cult in Tokyo several years later. There are no heroes or redeeming characters, it‘s really exploring the mindset of cult members and cult leaders and the author has a loooottt of thoughts on modern Japanese politics. It‘s 500 pages but so easy to read that I flew through it. I didn‘t love it but it was interesting.

Pickpick

What started out as a simple-seeming mystery about a guy trying to track down his girlfriend who might belong to a cult quickly veers into the realms of astrophysics, Gnosticism, history, Buddhism, and the merits of compassion in the face of nihilism. And really gross and disturbing sex scenes This book was disturbing and odd and darkly compelling. I mostly liked it, but I‘m worried that recommending this book would put me on a list somewhere 👀

Very odd but weirdly compelling novel that starts off as if it's going to be a fairly conventional crime novel about a guy on the track of his girlfriend who seems to have joined a cult but which veers off into the realms of Buddhism, Gnosticism, quantum physics, Japanese history and more. Oh and lots of very graphic and quite disturbing sex scenes. I enjoyed it but it won't appeal to everyone.

Bailedbailed

Well, this is officially my first #Bail2018 - I gave it a bit past my 50 page rule, but just couldn‘t find a compelling reason to plod through... maybe the fault lies in the translation which felt smooth, but perhaps fails to convey the context inherent in the original Japanese, but I feel like I know almost nothing about the characters and the inclusion of full lectures isn‘t promising this early in... maybe I‘ll try again someday...

Notafraidofwords I bailed too 7y
TorieStorieS @Notafraidofwords I felt guilty bailing, because I hate doing that- but I‘m glad to know that I‘m not the only one!!! 😊 7y
Drocchio03 I‘m glad to hear I‘m not the only one. I wanted to like it - or at least be able to bear through it. But those transcripts... I just couldn‘t! 6y
TorieStorieS @Drocchio03 I hear ya!! Trying not to feel guilty about bailing on books that are not for me is something I still struggle with- but it‘s not worth it when there are so many other books out there!! Good luck with your next read!!! 🤞🤞🤞 6y

#TBRtemptation post 1! Coming in 2018 Edition! Scheduled for a May release. The blurb does the title more justice than I could do, lol. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
