From the New York Times bestselling author of The Fall: The Crimson Shadow comes a compelling and suspenseful tale of politics and power set in the universe of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Elim Garak has ascended to Castellan of the Cardassian Union...but despite his soaring popularity, the imminent publication of a report exposing his people's war crimes during the occupation on Bajor looks likely to set the military against him. Into this tense situation come Dr. Katherine Pulaski—visiting Cardassia Prime to accept an award on behalf of the team that solved the Andorian genetic crisis—and Dr. Peter Alden, formerly of Starfleet Intelligence. The two soon find themselves at odds with Garak and embroiled in the politics of the prestigious University of the Union, where a new head is about to be appointed. Among the front-runners is one of Cardassia’s most respected public figures: Professor Natima Lang. But the discovery of a hidden archive from the last years before the Dominion War could destroy Lang’s reputation. As Pulaski and Alden become drawn into a deadly game to exonerate Lang, their confrontation escalates with Castellan Garak—a conflicted leader treading a fine line between the bright hopes for Cardassia’s future and the dark secrets still buried in its past... ™, ®, & © 2016 CBS Studios, Inc. Holy shit. I always discounted star trek novels but I was WRONG. This shows amazingly Cardassia recovering from the dominion war and has beautiful stories of Bajoran culture finding a new home on Cardassia. The plot is fun too and is directly in involved with the Cardassian intrigue of how to move forward as a nation. Multiple kidnappings and how do they all connect to Garak who is SO WELL WRITTEN. I cannot recommend enough to Star Trek fans.

snowpaws94 Please litsy. I need more characters so I can scream about how amazing this book is!!!!! 4y

This was a nice look at the Star Trek universe after DS9. It would have been nice to read some of the before events of Garak becoming castellan. However, it did not take away from the story. Garak is still the clever Cardassian.

julesG Clear sign I'm still tired and got up to early: I wondered why Garak was one of the Kardashians. 🙈 6y
lostinabookbrb @julesG Well, he is fabulous and has a certain kind of glamor 6y

Reading in bed. :) Garak, you sly Cardassian.

Bookwomble The episodes focusing on Garrack are some of my favourite DS9s 🥄🗣 6y
lostinabookbrb @Bookwomble Same here! I always wanted more Garak centered episodes. 6y
tournevis I love reading interviews with Anderson talking about how he played Garak, especially when playing against Siddig El Fadil. Man, they had fun! "I gave Garak the best years of my life!" dixit Siddig. 6y

Bookwomble I see I Anglicised the spelling of Garak's name! (Awaits 'polite call' from the Obsidian Order 😖) 6y
lostinabookbrb @tournevis Awesome! And he did such a great job. 6y
lostinabookbrb @Bookwomble Uh oh! D: Trust no one! And remember, everyone is guilty of something. Often times, you just have to figure out what. 6y
