Phonogram: Rue Britannia | Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie
8 posts | 17 read | 13 to read
Britannia is ten years dead. Phonomancer David Kohl hadn't spared his old patron a thought for almost as long... at which point his mind starts to unravel. Can he discover what's happened to the Mod-Goddess of Britpop while there's still something of himself left? Dark modern-fantasy in a world where music is magic, where a song can save your life or end it.

Phonogram is about people who magically channel the music they love to construct their identities and shape their world, and this final volume puts a bittersweet spin on that. It's very much about living with and recovering from the choices your younger self made, all as you discover how to become the next version of you. I loved it, and I know I'm gonna love it even more the second time through because that's how this whole thing works. #comics

I often struggle with Silver Age comics because the layouts are all rectangular panels arranged in grids. Page after page after page of 'em. I can't tell you how glad I was when I reached the point in my X-Men readthrough when the layouts got DYNAMIC (thanks, Neal Adams).

Fast forward a few decades, though, and we've got artists who bring rectangle grids to LIFE. For my money, Jamie McKelvie's grid layouts are among the best. #comics

xicanti They're so simple, but he works those beats with consummate skill. And of course, his dynamic layouts are also awesome. I constantly gush about that Noh-Varr one from YOUNG AVENGERS. 7y

This stack is inspirational. Not sure why reading I will get to this weekend. I had planned on reading all afternoon after running errands, but the 21 year old dropped by. We'll see if I do any better tomorrow. #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon

TricksyTails I am having major stack envy right now! You've got so many great ones here. I'm excited to see your posts for Phonogram. Actually, all of them! Love your stack! 😏😆📚💙 7y

An astonishing dive into fandom-as-magic. This first volume of PHONOGRAM is all about how we use the things we love to alter our world, define our relationships, and construct our identities--but in this case, none of that is abstract or metaphorical. The magic's real, attractive, challenging, & dangerous.

And awesome.

McKelvie's visual beats are among the best in the industry, too, and Matt Wilson's colours for the omnibus edition are spot on.

I plan at least a few comics (either in floppies or trades) during Readathon. Good thing I have a selection of thin books to choose from 😻 #30daysofreadathon @DeweysReadathon

#bookhaul All this for a mere $15 at a work "comic-con." Not much there, but these were golden. I loved Lumberjanes and now I have my own copy. Just need to get the rest now that the collection is started...

queerbookreader Have you read Phonogram? If so, how do you like it? 8y
AWahle @lemonlime799 I know I have some single issues, but it's been so long that I need to re-read it. But I know I didn't hate it... 8y

Collects issues 1-6 of Phonogram (trade subtitle is Rue Britannia). Wild and crazy and for fans of BritPop. I can totally see how Gillen and McKelvie got to WicDev from here. Wish they had done this in color.
