Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah's inspiring true storywhich was turned into a film, Emmanuel's Gift, narrated by Oprah Winfreyis nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most peoplebut not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled. Thompson's lyrical prose and Qualls's bold collage illustrations offer a powerful celebration of triumphing over adversity. Includes an author's note with more information about Emmanuel's charity. From the Hardcover edition.

Emmanuel‘s story of fighting ableism is well conveyed in this picture book. The author effectively shows Emmanuel‘s adaptive solutions that help him get to school and participate in sports while at the same time showing Emmanuel‘s observations about people with disabilities being excluded from Ghana society and how these factors all contributed to Emmanuel‘s 400 mile ride across the country to raise awareness. #DisabilitiesRep #PictureBook

Emmanuel's Dream was written by Laurie Ann Thompson. This book shares the story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a man who only had one leg. However, he proved people wrong and was able to bike across the entire country of Ghana- almost 400 miles! He was able to change how people viewed those with disabilities.

This is the true story of Emmanuel Ofosue Yeboah. Read about how he did not let his disability define him. Instead, he defined his disability. Read about how he became the man of the house to take care of his family when they needed him, despite having a disability. Read about how he had no friends at school. But that quickly changed; not only did he gain many friends but also he was well-respected. Full review on my blog.

Winner for Schneider Family Children's Book award. Its an inspiring story that encourages all kids out there to push their boundaries and explore all possibilities because no dream is too far to not be reached! The theme is touching and can create a positive influence for children, and the character himself shows bold aspects all kids will look up to.

How a kid become successful through his disability! Loved the main character and found this book to be a good read when showing kids anything can be possible!

His success was more than conquering nearly 400 miles in just 10 days. "He proved that one leg is enough to do great things - and one person is enough to change the world."

What an inspiring read.

This book tells a story that should be told, but it leaves out too much detail, even for a picture book biography. Emmanuel is an interesting and inspirational person, but there is little reason given for his bike ride across Ghana. My 5-year old was interested and asked many questions about why he only had one leg, and when Emmanuel was gifted a bike and helmet and socks, my son logically said, “You mean sock. Because he only has one foot.” 😂

ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE WORLD Full disclosure: I definitely got teary reading this. Emmanuel shares his story of proving to his country that being disabled does not equal unable by riding over 400 miles on a bike in ten days with one leg. A great book when you need a reminder that you can do it!
