The Real Story of Stone Soup
The Real Story of Stone Soup | Ying Chang Compestine
19 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
A stingy fisherman always makes his three young helpers do all his work. One day he scolds the lazy boys for forgetting to provide lunch. Dont worry, they say. We can make stone soup. The boys dig a hole and fill it with water and flavored stones. They trick the fisherman into making bowls and chopsticks, and fetching salt and sesame oil. While hes busy, they stir in bird eggs, add wild vegetables, and slip fish into the soup. By the time the old man returns, they have a feast fit for a king. To this day, Egg Drop Stone Soup is a traditional dish in southeast China. A recipe is included.

I probably wouldn‘t use this within the school, just because it is a little longer of a story and there is not much of a plot, I feel like the students would enjoy reading it bu maybe independently.

I think it is adorable how the book also includes a recipe for egg drop soup even though in the story the boys trick the old fisherman with “stone soup”!

The Real Story of Stone Soup by Ying Chang Compestine, 2007. Traditional Literature. The illustrations within this book are very effective in setting the tone. The illustrators use of watercolor helps to make the story come to life. The young boys in the story trick the fisherman into working for them for once while they prepare a meal for themselves. This book really gets children involved and introduces the idea of critical thinking!

I loved this Chinese version of stone soup, which is cooked in the ground. The author mentioned that on a trip to the Xi Shaung Ban Na region of China, she had an Egg Drop Soup version of this soup, which inspired the story. Can‘t wait to try the recipe detailed within! 🍜🍜🍜🍜

MinDea Very cool! I was in a play of this when I was in elementary school! 7y
EvieBee @MinDea Really?! How awesome. I love the story! Especially how snarky and unreliable the narrator is. 😂 7y
JaclynW My daughter's first grade class is having a Stone Soup day this week at school. She's so excited! She's bringing celery. Haha! I will have to checkout this version and read it with her. 7y
