Justine
Justine | marquis de Sade
The Marquis de Sade's notorious 1791 novel is narrated by Justine, who recounts the story of her life before being executed for her crimes. It is a tale of degradation, torture, and sexual slavery, and was so shocking it resulted in the arrest of its anonymous author. De Sade would spend the final thirteen years of his life in prison. Napoleon called Justine "the most abominable book ever engendered by the most depraved imagination." Sayre Street Books offers the world's greatest literature in easy to navigate, beautifully designed digital editions.

Pickpick

I have a fascination with Marquis De Sade, one of the first documented Libertines and one of the earliest writers of BDSM and same sex relations. 17th century French literature is extraordinary.

Triggers warnings all over this which should not be a surprise since the word sadism was derived from his name.

The first volume is on Spotify narrated by Susan Penhaligon which just her voice alone is extremely enjoyable.

This was another month with progress on long reads and lots of audio. I really enjoyed The Hunchback of Notre Dame, A Night Divided, and Gut.

Usually I pick a favorite to tag, but today I‘m tagging the worst book I‘ve ever read which I just finished last night. Justine was horrible with no character development for the main character and over 200 pages of rape, imprisonment, and violence.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego A successful month! Gut sounds very interesting, just stacked it. 😊📖💖 5y
britt_brooke Great month! Sorry the tagged book was such a bust. Sounds awful. 5y
wanderinglynn Great month! And I like your stats graphic. 👍🏻 5y

BookwormM I am with you on Justine why do the 1001 editors put us through this 5y
Reviewsbylola Now you‘ve got me wondering what the worst book I‘ve ever read was. 😆🤔 5y
JazzFeathers Jeez! How did you end up reading that book? 5y
Daisey @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It really was fascinating! If the human microbiome interests you, I also recommend 5y
Daisey @britt_brooke @JazzFeathers It was for the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list, and I knew going it that it was going to be tough to before starting. It was chosen as the randomly chosen book of the month for our Goodreads group so I thought it was the best opportunity to make myself read it. 5y
Daisey @Reviewsbylola It‘s an interesting thing to consider. I don‘t know that I‘ve ever thought when I finished another book that it was the worst, and this one is going to be hard to beat. 5y
Daisey @BookwormM I know part of the goal of the list for me is experiencing different perspectives, genres, and styles, but I‘ve come to the conclusion that there should only be one book per author. If I find a favorite I‘ll read more on my own, but the thought of reading another book by Marquis de Sade makes me shudder. 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Daisey with #1001Books, I count my (few) bails as being “read” ☺️...I do try to get through at least a couple chapters first. Have not tried de Sade yet and am in no hurry 5y
AshleyHoss820 I muscled my way through 120 Days of Sodom and I‘m going to read Justine soon, just so I can be done with de Sade. I have never had a book make me incapable of tolerating human contact while reading it, but 120 Days succeeded...And when my husband asked why I would finish the book, I said, “It will NOT be my Deathbed Book. The one book on the 1001 I didn‘t finish.” 😂🤣 5y
Daisey @AshleyHoss820 I have so many books on the list left that I think I'll wait to see if 120 Days of Sodom comes up for a group read. I'm not going to make myself read it independently any time soon! Seriously love your determination to power through. 💪😁 5y
AshleyHoss820 @Daisey I honestly don‘t blame you!! It was such a difficult read, I don‘t understand how people think it‘s brilliant... hahaha!! Thank you!! Stubbornness is in my nature, being a Taurus and all...😂🤣😂🤣 5y

I have never read anything by De Sade and found this for $.50, so thought I would see for myself. So far I would not class this as erotica , more of an amorality play showing vice and lack of religion makes more sense than virtue.

$1 finds today. Love bios and these two will be interesting for sure.

gentlepet I love all the fake stories about the Marquis as well as the real ones. Even after a thesis on the topic he'll always be Geoffrey Rush in Quills to me. 8y
danx Yes so true re Quills. Biographies of famous people are a funny thing, there's a business in it and every author has some new angle or info in an attempt to sell their book. 8y
