Murder in Pleasanton
Murder in Pleasanton: Tina Faelz and the Search for Justice | Joshua Suchon
1 post | 2 read | 9 to read
In April 1984, Foothill High freshman Tina Faelz took a shortcut on her walk home. About an hour later, she was found in a ditch, brutally stabbed to death. The murder shook the quiet East Bay suburb of Pleasanton and left investigators baffled. With no witnesses or leads, the case went cold and remained so for nearly thirty years. In 2011, the investigation finally got a break. Improved forensics recovered DNA from a drop of blood found at the scene matching Tina's classmate, Steven Carlson. Through dusty police files, personal interviews, letters and firsthand accounts, journalist Joshua Suchon revisits his childhood home to uncover the story of a disturbing crime and the controversial sentencing that brought long-awaited answers to a city tormented by questions.

The past month I have been devouring true crime ebooks as fast as I can get my hands on them. This was just a random discovery on #hoopla. It was different in the sense that the murder was committed over 30 years ago but the case went cold until 2012 when DNA from a classmate of the victim was found on the victim‘s purse. You know the entire book who the killer was, but it was interesting to see it go cold.

Reviewsbylola @kaye I thought this was well written if you‘re looking for a new true crime book! 7y
Kaye Thanks 👍. I‘ll keep it in mind for the future. Just starting a new one now ( not true crime ) Hoopla has a nice selection of true crime don‘t they ? 7y
Reviewsbylola Yes, they certainly do! I hate ebooks but I like having something to read on my phone for when I‘m stuck with a few minutes to spare or laying down with my kids for bed. True crime is the one genre that can keep my interest in ebook form. @kaye 7y

Mdargusch Sounds good! 7y
Drnkpnkprincess I spend about 2 months every summer in Pleasanton and had no idea about any of this! Gotta read this before my next trip out!! 😳😳 7y
emilyhaldi Seriously, you're rolling through these! 7y
Kaye @reviewsbylola Yea, usually if I‘m in a reading slump, True Crime is usually what yanks me out if it, IF I can find a really good one. 😁 7y
Reviewsbylola I know, five of my last ten reads were true crime ebooks. 🙈 @emilyhaldi 7y
Reviewsbylola There are a lot of pictures of the area where the crime occurred, both from 1984 and present. The author grew up in Pleasanton so he is very familiar with the area. @Drnkpnkprincess 7y
L_auren Love following your true crime marathon!! 7y
Reviewsbylola That‘s good because there‘s no end in sight. 😂😂. @L_auren 7y
glp4766 @Reviewsbylola I have always loved true crime stories... 7y
JenlovesJT47 I'm enjoying seeing your reviews for all of these true crime books. I'm also a big fan but haven't read too many lately. What would be your number one recommendation that you've read this year? 7y
Reviewsbylola Oooooh the entire year?! I‘d have to say Killers of the Flower Moon. It was just so well done. But the last few I have read were really good too. Convenient Suspect was especially interesting because the author went into the project assuming that the convicted woman was guilty, but after researching and reading all the testimony and police reports, she realized that an innocent person had been convicted. @JenlovesJT47 7y
JenlovesJT47 I saw your review for Convenient Suspect, it sounds really interesting! Have you read Fatal Vision about Jeffrey MacDonald? The author went into it with that mindset in reverse. He thought he was innocent and came to a different conclusion while writing the book. Would highly recommend if you haven't read it. I even tracked down a VHS copy of the movie a few years ago. That case along with the Manson murders has always stuck with me. 7y
Reviewsbylola Yes, I did enjoy Fatal Vision and I have read two other books by that author. He does a great job, although I do think he is a bit long winded. I‘m actually almost done with a book about Manson right now, written by family member Dianne Lake. It‘s a fresh perspective on life in the family and the murders. Very interesting! @JenlovesJT47 7y
JenlovesJT47 I saw that too, going to be looking for it at the library! I'm a huge fan of Sharon Tate and I still can't wrap my brain around all of the horrible things they did to those people. 😤 As a side note, I've read at least one other Joe McGinnis book and really like him, was sad to hear he died a year or two ago. 😪 7y
