The Ugly Duckling - Illustrated by John Hassall
The Ugly Duckling - Illustrated by John Hassall | Hans Christian Andersen
3 posts | 4 read
Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale of The Ugly Duckling illustrated in colour and black and white by English illustrator John Hassall. Here he shows his wonderful poster style that so suits children's books. Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of Illustration in children's literature. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

The duckling was taunted by the other farm animals and wandered away from the from meeting a variety of animals. DrSpalding This is certainly another classic and you could meet English learner 42 to sequence the important events in the story. Traditional literature teaches so many lessons to children and certainly belong in our elementary classrooms. 4y

The ugly duckling by Hans Andersen is a TF. This book teaches that it‘s okay to be different from others. After the swan notices that he is different from his siblings he accepts himself for who he is. Lesson plan for kindergarten https://www.education.com/lesson-plan/picture-this-the-ugly-duckling/

lizzie0922 @Brittney3 I love this book so much it takes me back to when I was 5 years old and my mom reading the book to me. I also like the link you provided with the book, it gives great ideas to incorporate in the classroom lesson #UCFWaltersLit 7y
BLYTHE44 @blythe44 What a great story for kids to read. I can‘t think of anyone person who doesn‘t have some flaw or self-esteem issue that they are dealing with. I love books like this that let us know that it‘s OK not to be perfect and be who you are. #UCFWalterslit (edited) 7y
Kirsten.Pacheco This is a great book to teach students that not everyone is perfect, in fact nobody is, and that‘s okay! Being ourselves is what makes us perfect in our own way! Also, your resource is interactive so that makes it even more awesome! 7y
Linsayesp @Brittney3 this is one of my all time favorite books for younger children. It teaches them that it‘s okay not to be perfect. 7y

The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson, and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney is the perfect picture book for introducing students to traditional literature. It has won the Caldecott award and works great for story telling. The book tells a survival story of an awkward duck who faces many challenges but later grows into a beautiful swan. It‘s a great way to teach patience to young readers! The website attached includes a read aloud of the story.

Jbombardiere http://www.first-school.ws/activities/fairytales/ugly-duckling.htm . UDL 9.1- promise expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. EL 14- simplifying speech to make it slower and redundant. 7y
DrSpalding As the old saying goes, Patience is a virtue. This traditional tail can teach a valuable lesson two young students. 7y
