Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night (Media Tie-In)
Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night (Media Tie-In) | James Runcie
6 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
1955. Canon Sidney Chambers, loveable priest and part-time detective, is back. Accompanied by his faithful Labrador, Dickens, and the increasingly exasperated Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney is called to investigate the unexpected fall of a Cambridge don from the roof of King's College Chapel, a case of arson at a glamour photographer's studio and the poisoning of Zafar Ali, Grantchester's finest spin bowler. Alongside his sleuthing, Sidney has other problems. Can he decide between his dear friend, the glamorous socialite Amanda Kendall and Hildegard Staunton, the beguiling German widow? To make up his mind Sidney takes a trip abroad, only to find himself trapped in a web of international espionage just as the Berlin Wall is going up.

We had bad storms all night (we're fine!), & maybe it's weird to say so, but this book paired well with the storms? It was just the right amount of intrigue, with relatively quick resolutions. I don't think the episodic nature of the book worked as well in this as the 1st in the series, which revolved around the church calendar. (Sidney is a vicar, after all.) But it worked. This one had the first *huge* difference between the books & the TV show.

lauraisntwilder @KathyWheeler Did you make it through the storms okay? 12mo
KathyWheeler @lauraisntwilder I did, but it was scary there for awhile! I thought our electricity would go out but it never did. I‘m glad you‘re okay. 11mo
lauraisntwilder @KathyWheeler Good to hear! That wind was SO loud! 11mo

The covers of the next books in each of my British mystery series are all blue, including the second Thursday Murder Club, which I haven't bought yet. 💙

I liked the second book way better than the first one (I might have to give that one a second chance). Having faces to go with the names (PBS series) is helpful.

Finished this book last week. Fun, light series for anyone needing a break from heavy reading.
