The Fourth Turning
The Fourth Turning | Neil Howe, William Strauss
8 posts | 7 read | 3 reading | 7 to read
First came the postwar High, then the Awakening of the '60s and '70s, and now the Unraveling. This audacious and provocative book tells us what to expect just beyond the start of the next century. Are you ready for the Fourth Turning? Strauss and Howe will change the way you see the world--and your place in it. In The Fourth Turning, they apply their generational theories to the cycles of history and locate America in the middle of an unraveling period, on the brink of a crisis. How you prepare for this crisis--the Fourth Turning--is intimately connected to the mood and attitude of your particular generation. Are you one of the can-do "GI generation," who triumphed in the last crisis? Do you belong to the mediating "Silent Majority," who enjoyed the 1950s High? Do you fall into the "awakened" Boomer category of the 1970s and 1980s, or are you a Gen-Xer struggling to adapt to our splintering world? Whatever your stage of life, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for America's next rendezvous with destiny. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I wish I had read this sooner.

I give it 4 stars only because it seemed to be a bit overwritten. For me, much of the information could have been summarized instead of fleshed out as deeply as it was.

We are in the 4th turning. Much of what the authors say is possible is proving prophetic. It's scary.

Worth reading.

History is cyclical. This explains the cycle. Looking forward to this.

This was a missing piece to my understanding of how our society and differing generations connect and create historical changes. Simply fascinating!! How crisis periods in history create an era of protected children and those protected children in turn rebel against the authority that protected them. They give their children freedom and in some senses neglect. The cycle of generational impact continues. Here we are in another crisis, 4th Turning.

RamsFan1963 I need to come back to this. I bailed before but it was a case of it's me not the book. I wasn't in the right mood for this kind of in depth analysis 1y
BBowling It covers a lot of history. In some places where my understanding of that historical account was weak, I skim read. If I didn‘t do that I may not have finished. However I appreciate his accounting of history and I didn‘t see any flaws in his connections in the larger part I fully followed. His current book The Fourth Turning is here comes out in July. 1y

WOW & OMG!!! This 1997 national bout seller is a must read for where we are as a nation, a society, a world right now. Even though this book was written in 1997, it still has and will continue to have relevance to the world we live in. Where we were, where we are, where we are going. As the world continues to turn and we continue to enter different turnings, this book maintains its relevance. Unbelievably (cont in comments)...

TheHeartlandBookFairy Unbelievably accurate, incredibly interesting! I listened to the audio version and I felt that it really captured and kept my attention. This may make my top 10 books for the year (out of more than 100). A must read (or listen😉)! 3y
RamsFan1963 I started this and it began to freak me out, so I bailed. I want to try again in 2022. 3y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @RamsFan1963 I agree, it was a bit freaky! But, spot on! 3y

I have to put this back on the shelf. It's a case of "its not you, its me", because the book is well written and very insightful, but with the current state of unrest in this country, it's just working on my anxiety. Maybe after the election I can start reading it again.

Though we live in a time of relative peace and comfort, we have settled into a mood of pessimism about the long term future, fearful that our superpower nation is somehow rotting from within.

Written in 1996, it's amazing how it hits America 2020 right in the bullseye.

I heard a theory that we are on the verge of a fourth turning so I am reading about it. I'm on page 3 and already afraid.

I read this book at a pivotal point in life - senior year of high school in 1997. I still think about the points the authors made, right or wrong, about past generations of Americans when I read books like Spinster. I don't remember all the predictions about millennials, so maybe I'll read it again.
