The Learners
The Learners: A Novel | Chip Kidd
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Fresh out of college in the summer of 1961, Happy lands his first job as a graphic designer (okay, art assistant) at a small Connecticut advertising agency populated by a cast of endearing eccentrics. Life for Happy seems to be -- well, happy. But when he's assigned to design a newspaper ad recruiting participants for an experiment in the Yale Psychology Department, Happy can't resist responding to the ad himself. Little does he know that the experience will devastate him, forcing a reexamination of his past, his soul, and the nature of human cruelty -- chiefly, his own. Written in sharp, witty prose and peppered with absorbing ruminations on graphic design, The Learners again shows that Chip Kidd's writing is every bit as original, stunning, and memorable as his celebrated book jackets.

I‘m finding this a book that I have to pay close attention to. In a way, I like that very much.

I remember not liking so much a previous novel by this author. However, I started this book two days ago, and I‘m finding it a fun read!

ReadingEnvy I think he's better at book covers than writing, personally 5y
SqueakyChu @ReadingEnvy 😂 I hope this story doesn‘t go from good to bad! This book has an interesting cover. That red cover comes off to reveal some kind of meter. I don‘t know what it is yet, though. 😳 5y
SqueakyChu @ReadingEnvy So I‘m halfway through this novel now and enjoying it a lot! 5y
ReadingEnvy @SqueakyChu oh good! I don't think I've tried this one. 5y
SqueakyChu @ReadingEnvy I‘m kind of a weird reader. I often read more books than one at a time. When I do that, I usually find one book that I want to read all the way through at once. This book is one of those! 😃 5y

Alora Ouhhh 15 instruments?! Wow! I‘m going to say thats the lie. If not...that is amazing!!! I can only play the saxophone and a little bit of piano (only one hand) lol! Thank you so much for playing!! 💙💙🦁 5y
Megabooks You don‘t have 6 siblings. 5y
DaveGreen7777 Hmmm... you have “music” right in your name, so I‘m guessing the 15 instruments is actually true! I‘ll go with the dogs names as the lie? 🧐 5y

I‘m the target audience for Chip Kidd‘s novel about an advertising designer who find his moral center upturned after designing an ad for a very interesting client. I loved all the inside details about graphic design and the plot involving the Milgram experiment (and I love his book jacket designs!). However, the story doesn‘t stick the landing and I found the ending to be unsatisfactory.
