Sacred Clowns
Sacred Clowns | Tony Hillerman
5 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
During a kachina ceremony at the Tano Pueblo, the antics of a dancing koshare fill the air with tension. Moments later, the clown is found bludgeoned to death, in the same manner a reservation schoolteacher was killed only days before. Officer Jim Chee and Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believe that answers lie in the sacred clown's final cryptic message to the Tano people. But to decipher it, the two Navajo policemen may have to delve into closely guarded tribal secrets—on a sinister trail of blood that links a runaway, a holy artifact, corrupt Indian traders, and a pair of dead bodies.

I was pretty excited to pick up the next installment of the Leaphorn & Chee series. There was good pacing here, and even though there was still a bit too much of Chee mooning over what to do about Janet, I really enjoy exploring his desire to balance his religious beliefs with his police work. At one point, he is trying to explain to Janet how he defines the Navajo concept of “hozho,“ a sort of state of harmony and balance. He says ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) “[an example] - terrible drought, crops dead, sheep dying. Spring dried out. No water. The Hopi, or the Christian, maybe the Moslem, they pray for rain. The Navajo has the proper ceremony done to restore himself to harmony with the drought.“

Chee's genuine belief in the traditions and ceremonies of the Navajo are balanced by the more pragmatic Leaphorn who, while not scornful, is definitely skeptical. I'm really enjoying this series ⬇

Nothing urgent for my #weeklyforecast - I am just using my random draw to decide which windowsill book is next!! Started the tagged book this morning, but other than that, this is a wildcard week!! I am down to only two chapter-a-day reads so that is opening up some more reading time. Can't believe we have already passed June's halfway mark!!

Book 11 of the Leaphorn and Chee series. Always a good series to read. This book had them trying to solve three murders across several jurisdictions.
