Somehow very appropriate to finish this on the 4th of July. I really enjoyed this series, and was very satisfied with the ending. I don‘t always love an epilogue but in this case the eulogies were a nice touch, so you could see how everyone‘s lives turned out.

The conclusion to Michael Grant‘s AU World War II YA historical trilogy is an action-packed thrill ride that honours the sacrifice of those who fought while making interesting observations about women in combat, highlighting the prejudice experienced by African Americans and providing a moving postscript that made me emotional, but the final quarter is too rushed and I wanted to know more about some of the characters‘ post war choices.

A great end to this series. I loved the historical fiction with a twist in this world. World War Two but with female soldiers. The way Grant works the way people thought and culture into this idea was so interesting.

I'm nerding out over this paragraph - it is delicious writing with a colon, ellipsis, and serial commas. Fabulous vocabulary and punctuation combined to bring a picture to life in your mind.
For reference, the paragraph is talking about soldiers on a large ship that hasn't even left harbour yet.

Maybe too many war books in a row, but I've been waiting for this one for a year and I am digging in 💜💜💜

An incredibly satisfying end to the Soldier Girls trilogy. Like the first two installments, Grant doesn‘t shy away from the dark parts of war, and this long slog from D-Day to the camps is truly dark. And riveting: once I had more than a few minutes to read, I devoured this. A solid five star pick for teens and adults alike.
