Once again the incomparable New York Times bestselling master of suspense, Elizabeth Peters, brings an exotic world of adventure, intrigue, and danger to vivid life, in a tale as exciting, mysterious, and powerful as ancient Egypt. A unique treasure obtained by unscrupulous means, the small gold statuette of an unidentified Egyptian king is a priceless relic from a bygone era. But more than history surrounds the remarkable artifactfor it is said that early death will come to anyone who possesses it. Enjoying a world finally at peace, the Emersons have returned to the Valley of the Kings in 1922. With the lengthy ban on their archaeological activities lifted, Amelia Peabody and her family look forward to delving once more into the age-old mysteries buried in Egypt's ever-shifting sands. But a widow's strange storyand even stranger requestis about to plunge them into a storm of secrets, treachery, superstition . . . and murder. The woman, a well-known author, has come bearing an ill-gotten treasurea golden likeness of a forgotten kingwhich she claims is cursed. Already, she insists, it has taken the life of her husband, and unless it is returned to the tomb from which it was stolen, more people will die. Intrigued by the mystery, Amelia and her clan resolve to uncover the secrets of the statue's origins, setting off on a trail that twists and turns in directions they never anticipatedand, perhaps, toward an old nemesis with unscrupulous new designs. But each step toward the truth seems to reveal another peril, suggesting to the intrepid Amelia that the curse is more than mere superstition. And its next victim might well be her irascible husband, Radcliffe, their beloved son, Ramses, his lovely wife, Nefret ... or Amelia Peabody herself. A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time, The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.

Bailedbailed

1/5⭐ I wanted to push through & finish the series after slogging through the first 16 books. However, the mystery part is sloooooooow. The characters, while familiar & comforting, act entirely predictably & add nothing new of interest whatsoever. It feels like reading each of the previous 6 books over again, my attention drifting despite Rosenblat's phenomenal narration. So I've given myself permission to remove the remaining books from my TBR.

Sace I remember really liking the first few books of the series then I lost steam around book 4 or 5. 5y
hissingpotatoes @Sace Same! Once Ramses grew up we had to deal with him being irritatingly lovesick, and then it became kinda samesy after that. 5y
CarolynM I still love them anyway. 5y
hissingpotatoes @CarolynM Yes, I understand! 😊 5y

Pickpick

I‘ve read them all in print, but over the past few years, I‘ve slowly been rereading via audio, narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. She IS Amelia‘s voice in my head now. I loved this one. It‘s got my favorite versions of the main characters (adult, non-lovesick, non-whiny Ramses especially), all my favorite recurring characters (Sethos!), and a great supporting cast, plus a good mystery.

TrishB Sounds good 👍🏻 7y
DGRachel @TrishB They are! I owe a debt of gratitude to my mother @dsfisher for introducing me to them (and letting me read her hardback copies). I try to keep my reviews spoiler free for those who haven‘t started the series, but it means I can‘t gush about some of the things I loved most! 7y
robinb I want to read this series in 2018. 7y

DGRachel @robinb Yes, do it!! I don‘t think you‘ll regret it. 😊 7y
TricksyTails This sounds interesting! I love Egyptian mythology. Would you recommend reading first then audio? 7y
DGRachel @TricksyTails I think you can do either. I read them all, and only started the audio because for a long time I could only “do” audio of books I‘d already read. I couldn‘t focus on doing other tasks and listen to a new book at the same time. I‘m better at that now so I listen to more books I haven‘t read in print, but I love the narrator of these so much, that I listen to them as a treat while I do things like filing at work. 7y
TrishB I‘m trying to finish some series at the start of next year - these may be on future tbrs!! 7y
TricksyTails I was the same way. Only could do rereads in audio. Much better now. I'll have to look the first book up. I need a good series to get lost in. 7y
TricksyTails You're awesome! Thank you 😊 7y
DGRachel @TricksyTails You‘re welcome! 7y
