⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved this novel for how well Gee captures the claustrophobic and parochial nature of New Zealand during the Post-war years. A time when olive oil was only available from the pharmacy. Although there is a murder at the heart of this book I thought it was at it's best as a meditation on moral absolutism and nostalgia. Gee seems to be writing about his own childhood here, and when he does so his writing is so graceful and evocative.
