Script and Scribble
Script and Scribble: The Rise and Fall of Handwriting | Kitty Burns Florey
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
"A witty and readable (and fetchingly illustrated and glossed) excursion through the history of handwriting." The Wall Street Journal Let a self-confessed "penmanship nut" take you on a tour of the strange and beautiful world of handwriting. Since her Catholic school days learning the Palmer Method, Kitty Burns Florey has been in love with handwriting, and can't imagine a world where schools forego handwriting drills in favor of teaching something called keyboarding. In this "winsome mix of memoir and call to arms" (Chicago Tribune), Florey weaves together the evolution of writing implements and scripts, pen-collecting societies, the golden age of American penmanship, and the growth in popularity of handwriting analysis, and asks the question: Is writing by hand really no longer necessary in today's busy world? "Charmingly composed and handsomely presented," Script & Scribble traces the history of penmanship to the importance of writing by hand in an increasingly digital age (The Boston Globe). From the Trade Paperback edition.

Sneaking in the backdoor to say hi... I always feel like I'm back and ready to be sociable, and then something happens and I lose track of everything again. But let's give it a go.

I finished this book last night. It's partly a personal discussion of handwriting, partly an account of handwriting styles that becomes US-centric pretty much once the US gets colonised. It has lots of samples, which is helpful in understanding what's described.

I think Kitty Burns Florey is my spirit animal. As a self-professed lover of penmanship, KBF wrote a book about the history of penmanship and poses the question: Are penmanship and #cursive lessons still needed in today's technological world? Kitty and I believe they are. So does Bushy the Owl.

#fallintobooks (I'm going to spend the month trying not to post anything for #fallintonooks, because that is how I keep typing this hashtag! 😂)

TheWordJar And if you are interested in more KBF, she has an excellent book on diagramming sentences (which makes me very happy!): 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I teach & have my kids practice cursive. I too believe it's needed. I will admit my handwriting is not good. I used to have good handwriting but I became a nurse & became sloppy. Nice Owl 🦉😍😍😍😍 7y
Wife Yes! #cursive If they are no longer teaching it when my grandson goes to school, I will be teaching him. 📖🖋 7y

TheWordJar We do handwriting and cursive too @ForeverNerdy. I always loved handwriting in school, so mine was pretty good. The only thing that really helped me with later in life is having family ask me to make signs for various events since my handwriting is the most legible! But I still love it! 7y
TheWordJar Thanks @RealLifeReading! I'm slowly starting to take out my fall and Halloween decorations! 7y
