Menagerie Manor | Gerald Malcolm Durrell
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
"Menagerie Manor" is sure to delight fans of Durrell's beloved classic "My Family and Other Animals" and other accounts of his lifelong fascination with members of the animal kingdom. With his unfailing charm, Durrell tells the story of how he finally fulfilled his childhood dream of founding his own private zoo, the Manor of Les Augres, on the English Channel island of Jersey. With the help of an enduring wife, a selfless staff, and a reluctant bank manager, the zoo grows, and readers are treated to a colorful parade of the zoo's unusual animal inhabitants."

It was delightful encountering so many different animals I didn't know existed - e.g.binturong, tamarin, genet, touracou, potto, skink.
In this book Durrell goes through the adventures of having a private zoo. I wonder how many private zoos are there currently?
Read this for #mustacheoncover for #booked2021

FlowerFairy I was a zookeeper for 20 years and now run a nonprofit exotic animal sanctuary with a friend, in addition to working in health care. I‘ve been fortunate to work at one time or another with every animals you listed (binturongs do NOT smell like popcorn or Fritos and tamarins are more fun than you can imagine 😍). I‘m definitely adding this book to Mount TBR! 💜 4y
Smarkies @FlowerFairy nice to know! I just read a quick wiki article on Durrell - he does seem to have championed helping endangered populations. I loved reading about the animals in this one. 4y

What makes a Saturday better? Coming home from Parkrun and finding a “new” stack of books at home...specially bought FOR you by the Dad person at a farmers marker earlier that day from a author you love!
And then randomly channel hopping (on the same day)and finding a series based on the books (The Corfu Trilogy) the same author wrote about the time they spend in Corfu entitled (The Durrels) and it is awesome!
