Castles: Their History and Evolution in Medieval Britain
Castles: Their History and Evolution in Medieval Britain | Marc Morris
6 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
From the author of The Norman Conquest and A Great and Terrible King comes a sweeping and stunning history of the most magnificent castles in Britain. Beginning with their introduction in the eleventh century, and ending with their widespread abandonment in the seventeenth, Marc Morris explores many of the countrys most famous castles, as well as some spectacular lesser-known examples. At times this is an epic tale, driven by characters like William the Conqueror, King John and Edward I, full of sieges and conquest on an awesome scale. But it is also by turns an intimate story of less eminent individuals, whose adventures, struggles and ambitions were reflected in the fortified residences they constructed. Be it ever so grand or ever so humble, a castle was first and foremost a home. To understand castleswho built them, who lived in them, and whyis to understand the forces that shaped medieval Britain.

Very enjoyable. Exactly the kind of info and depth I wanted, with a sense of humour.

I am enjoying this a lot. I grew up loving castles, though it had always struck me as weird how Welsh tourism revolves around castles built by the English to keep us down. It even covers one of my favourite castles, Caerphilly. It's pretty even handed about the merits and shortcomings of both sides as regards the Welsh rebellions, too, which doesn't hurt!

rabbitprincess Yes, my mum and I had mixed feelings about the castles when we visited Wales this year, especially because we'd just been reading the Brothers of Gwynedd quartet by Edith Pargeter. We loved visiting Wales though and want to go back! 7y

An excellent look at the rise and fall of castles in England, Scotland and Wales. Just the right length, written clearly and containing well-timed doses of humour. A good book to try if you haven't read this author.
