In 1953 Watson and Crick discovered the double helical structure of DNA and Watson's personal account of the discovery, The Double Helix, was published in 1968. Genes, Girls and Gamow is also autobiographical, covering the period from when The Double Helix ends, in 1953, to a few years later, and ending with a Postscript bringing the story up to date. Here is Watson adjusting to new-found fame, carrying out tantalizing experiments on the role of RNA in biology, and falling in love. The book is enlivened with copies of handwritten letters from the larger than life character George Gamow, who had made significant contributions to physics but became intrigued by genes, RNA and the elusive genetic code. This is a tale of heartbreak, scientific excitement and ambition, laced with travelogue and '50s atmosphere.

Another series I'm rereading this year - absolutely LOVED the Swallows & Amazons books when I first read them, so I'm going through them again. This is the second book in the series, full of exploring, pirates, shipwrecks, mountain climbing, caves, and more! Every page was a delight.

Through a series of events, I ended up with TWO beautiful, hardcover editions of this book. I would genuinely love to send this copy on to someone - I hate to just chuck it in the giveaway box if there is someone here in Litsy Land who would like it!! Let me know if you are interested in having me send it your way!!

curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks i would be happy to give it a new home:) also happy to pay for the shipping:) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @curiouserandcurioser - Is your address in the #LitsyLove document accurate? As long as you don't mind it shipping media mail, I'm happy to send it to you at no cost. I know it's silly, but I'm scared if I send it to Goodwill, I will next see it on some horrifying YouTube video where they destroy beautiful old books to make some craft! 😂 3y
curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks i believe its accurate-i havent moved, so it should be:) i do not mind media mail at all-its so kind of you to send it to me!! Its not silly to feel that way -i would feel the same way, absolutely!! Thank you again for your kindness and generosity💜 3y
TheAromaofBooks The document has you living in Oak Harbor, so if that's correct, I will send it your way - north of me, as we're southeast of Columbus. 3y

I love reading while doing random chores. Super busy weekend, but I did finish this absolutely delightful book while shelling black beans harvested from my garden! Swallowdale was everything I wanted from a sequel & more - can't wait to read Peter Duck! Only clocked 1hr 25min for #24b4Monday & #SummersEndReadathon yesterday, which leaves me at almost 7hrs for the weekend. However, made lots of home project progress!

Andrew65 7 hours is a good time, even more so when you enjoyed the book as much as this. 👏👏👏 5y
Nute Congratulations on the harvest from your garden! Green thumbs up! 5y

Clwojick Agreed. Listening to audiobooks while doing projects is the beat way to make time fly. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Nute - Thank you! I like to try something different each year and this is our first year growing soup beans - they were fun and easy. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick - I'm so jealous of your ability to listen to audio books while doing all kinds of things! I just can't listen to books while doing anything else because I get distracted by the something else and miss critical chunks of book haha So I have to find ways to read actual books while still working on things... like shelling beans!! 5y

Almost done with this one, but time to call it a night. 3.25hrs of reading today, so a total of almost 5.5hrs altogether so far for #24b4Monday and #SummersEndReadathon . Lots of projects scheduled tomorrow so I don't anticipate much reading time, but this book is such a delight that I don't mind taking my time.

Just ten minutes of reading so far today for the #24b4Monday and #SummerEndReadathon readathons, but I am already so happy to be reunited with the Swallows!! Busy morning working on our remodeling project this morning, but anticipating some solid reading time this afternoon.

Andrew65 Sounds great, love those books. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I just found there was a whole series after I reread the first book as an adult a month or so ago. I'm intrigued to find out where the stories wander!! :-) 5y

Anyone else participating in the next #24B4Monday readathon? I just realized that my husband is going to be gone that Saturday, so I may have an opportunity to clock some serious hours!!

Childhood is magic. There was nothing I wanted more as a child than to sleep under the stars and build fires at my little camp. I love reading Ransome because he reminds me of the two childhoods I had: the real one of adventures and exploration and the imagined one in which I went beyond the confines of my 13 mi^2 island. Both were magical.
