This first in a five part series featuring The Seeker, head of the Guard protecting Oliver Cromwell, is compared to the Sansome series and aptly so, although it is set 100 years after the time of that other Cromwell and his infamous king. I expected to enjoy the mystery and intrigue of this tale and it‘s enigmatic antihero but was unprepared for the beauty of the writing. The author she has a gorgeous way with prose! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you love historical fiction you will love this.

Well written & entertaining historical crime set in Cromwell's London. The first novel in a series, it refreshingly doesn't waste a lot of time setting things up & you get very little of Damian Seeker's backstory - the point is he's an enigma, an unknown & unknowable element. He is, in fact, a hugely intriguing character. The murder mystery is also strong but it's finding out more about this anti-hero that would make me read more of the series.

Just starting this one. It was buried deep in the recesses of my Kindle, probably bought on a daily deal 4, 7 or even 11 years ago - who knows?! I selected it by putting my TBR total into a random number generator. This was number ... ha ha, like I'm going to admit that! (It was a big number 😜)

A 17th Century spy novel. Not my usual fodder but I ended up with 2 new copies (no idea how!) and felt I should give it a go - I think it was a Waterstones book club read? It won the 2005 Historical Dagger. I am always interested to see how these novels handle gender issues. #feministreading #historicalspythriller #booksacquiredbyaccident
