George Eliot, for some reason, hated shopping. Jane Eyre cringes at Mr Rochester's pre-wedding excess, while Undine Spragg's spending drives her husband to despair. The Girl with a Pearl Earring turns up her nose at some stale meat, Tom Ripley lusts after Venetian leather, and Mrs. Dalloway chooses flowers on Bond Street. As people began to shop more, novelists imagined them doing it. The darker side of shopping is here in the letters, diaries, and memoirs of those who remember blackmarkets and rations. There are even records from the England's central criminal court of audacious and desperate five-finger discounts, and a recent account of brawling at IKEA. It's Black Friday, even here in Germany. Booksellers are offering up to 20% discount on English books and I'm so tempted to fill my basket. But then #IllRemember that I signed up for #JolabokaflodSwap and #SantaThing and don't press "buy now".

GingerAntics We‘ve exported Black Friday? Wow. I almost want to say sorry, but the book sales can be really good. For a while, our Black Friday tradition was to get Starbucks at like 5:30 in the morning, then go wait in line at half price books. The first hundred customers got $10 off any purchase, and one lucky customer got a $100 gift card just for showing up. What‘s not to love about that?! 5y
julesG @GingerAntics It's been Black Friday Week for what felt like ten days. And the deals on English/Foreign language books are the only attractive thing. Kindle books are not reduced though. 😑 Wish they would lift the book price fixing arrangement for books in German, no discounts on German books. 😭 5y

GingerAntics I am also not allowed on Apple Books today, anymore. I will forfeit my reading streak to have food, as it seems every other book on my wish list is currently on sale. I bought three and pulled the plug on that madness. 5y

Ahhhhhh... I wanted to take a little break from reading and look a bit for birthday gifts at Etsy...

An hour and several Euros later... Tomorrow will be a bad day for my bank account. 🙈🙈🙈
