A respected literary biographer, Mark is working on the life of Gilbert Strong - a writer about whom he thinks he knows everything. Happily married, and apparently dedicated to a life of letters, he nevertheless falls in love with Strong's granddaughter Carrie, a vague and unsophisticated young woman more interested in bedding plants than books or passion. As Mark's obsessions develop over a hot, complicated summer, he begins to understand that nothing is ever what it seems; not Gilbert Strong, and certainly not himself. According to Mark is a witty and moving look at love, literature and the dangers of middle-aged folly.

4⭐️ I usually dislike a novel with infidelity, but I tolerated this one so much even though the affair is rather annoying. And then I realized that I can only tolerate Penelope Lively for such theme because she‘s so good in applying all the fine nuances. Moon Tiger is a love story (another theme I don‘t fancy) but it‘s one of my favs. I‘d read anything written by her, really!

Ruthiella I really liked this one too! 1y
sisilia @Ruthiella I‘m thinking about which Lively‘s book to read next 😁 1y
Ruthiella I know! So many to choose from. For me it‘ll probably be this one, only because I own a copy (edited) 1y
sisilia @Ruthiella This looks good! I‘d probably go with 1y

Ive given this a 5* review on gr as the author created characters whose lives i was happy to dive into. At times both funny + moving she creates situations that should make me cringe but i laughed at the gr8 conversations esp as we see it from different perspectives. The plot - a middle age biographer in embarking on a project abt a difficult essayist falls for the 'fey' gdtr to his wifes concern and finds the secret of his subject in the end. Gr8

CarolynM I loved Moon Tiger so much I decided I need to read more Penelope Lively. I've stacked this one🙂 6y

Moon tiger is one of my favourite books and surprisingly save for her memoir my only penelope lively novel so I have plunged into this wonderful story which is uniquely written. Anyway this section i thought seemed apt for everyone on litsy who dare i say may be tempted to keep dipping into their book even at the dinner table ☺

Cathythoughts I have Moon Tiger & keep meaning to read it .... up the list it goes ♥️👍🏻 6y
