Jane Austen and Crime
Jane Austen and Crime | Susannah Fullerton
6 posts | 1 read | 14 to read
Susannah Fullerton has brilliantly hit on the theme of crime andpunishment in Jane Austen's work. Fullerton shows how the Regencyworld was really a dangerous place with a fast rising crime rate and alegal system that handed out ferocious sentences. Her book will beessential reading for every Janeite.

Crimes of all kind are examined in this book. As a Janeite, I loved it! Combining Austen‘s words with crimes of the day, Fullerton looks at Austen‘s world in a different way. #MyShots #MusicalNewYear

Cinfhen @LeahBergen this one looks like it‘s calling for you 💕 6y

Pickpick

I finished this during the #24in48 readathon. This was absolutely marvelous! A combination of true crime cases with references to Austen's letters and writings, this is a must for Janeites. Fullerton blends these two elements perfectly and gives each crime prevalent in the 18th and 19th century its own chapter. Images portraying certain acts and punishment also appear. Truly fantastic!

suvata You've convinced me. Going to look for this one. 7y

This week, I'm learning all about judicial process, as it is the first time I've been selected to jury duty. Not too happy about this, especially since it coincides with tomorrow's 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death. I'm bummed I can't spend the day enjoying Austen, as I had planned to months ago.

However, this book combines these two events so well - Austen's take on crime, as found in her books. May be fun to bring this tomorrow...

Texreader I was so pleased to serve on a jury besides the fact I'm a litigator and it helped me see cases from the other side. It's a unique process and I really enjoyed it even though it was a huge inconvenience. Take the book. I suspect you'll have time to read. 7y
rubyslippersreads This sounds great! 7y
Librarybelle I will definitely have time to read, @Texreader . There is the value to seeing this facet of the justice system. 7y
Librarybelle I thought so too, @rubyslippersreads ! I received this as a gift who knows how much I enjoy Austen. 7y
