Subtly Worded
Subtly Worded | Teffi
6 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
A selection of the finest stories by this female Chekhov Teffi's genius with the short form made her a literary star in pre-revolutionary Russia, beloved by Tsar Nicholas II and Vladimir Lenin alike. These stories, taken from the whole of her career, show the full range of her gifts. Extremely funny-a wry, scathing observer of society-she is also capable, as capable even as Chekhov, of miraculous subtlety and depth of character. There are stories here from her own life (as a child, going to meet Tolstoy to plead for the life of War and Peace's Prince Bolkonsky, or, much later, her strange, charged meetings with the already-legendary Rasputin). There are stories of émigré society, its members held together by mutual repulsion. There are stories of people misunderstanding each other or misrepresenting themselves. And throughout there is a sly, sardonic wit and a deep, compelling intelligence. Pushkin Collection editions feature a spare, elegant series style and superior, durable components. The Collection is typeset in Monotype Baskerville, litho-printed on Munken Premium White Paper and notch-bound by the independently owned printer TJ International in Padstow. The covers, with French flaps, are printed on Colorplan Pristine White Paper. Both paper and cover board are acid-free and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.

I couldn't resist this beautiful little short fiction collection from the Pushkin Collection, a range that's designed to be enjoyable to hold. It's about 3mm shorter and 1cm wider than a mass market paperback, and it does feel GREAT in the hand.

Unfortunately, the first eight stories did almost nothing for me. Guess Teffi just ain't my thing, whether or not she's bound for maximum reading comfort.

Luckily enough my latest read fits #sideprofiles! These stories were delightful; clever, funny, sly and devilishly insightful, and out of nowhere one will just break your heart. Teffi was a master of a while range of tones and she can shift them with a single sentence, sometimes even a word. From 1910 to 1952 her vignettes pierce right to the heart of Russian and emigré society #jubilantjuly @RealLifeReading

Speaking of pretty Pushkin covers, @vivastory, this is my June subscription volume. I've had my eye on it for ages so I'm really happy that it's this month's book. Now I just need to get through the backlog...

Enjoyed these stories - deftly written, more than meets the eye and a sense of humour. A window into St Petersburg & Paris literary circles of the time, fascinating in itself - not to mention meeting Tolstoy and Rasputin...

Enjoying Teffi's short stories - deceptively light - and open up the weekend FT to find more for the to read pile - looks intriguing!
