I read this as it was part of the BBC‘s Between the Covers new series - they choose 6 new books and, this series, 6 recent Booker nominees. This was the only Booker nominee I hadn‘t already read, and I‘m not sure I could recommend it. It‘s a stream of the MC‘s innermost thoughts, within constantly shifting timeframes, so all rather confusing.

Of the new books, I‘d only read the Faulks when the list was announced, but have now read four.

(...) gives a narrative and suspense class here. Relating events from a single day, his novel gives a new dimension to the police genre and performs a real feat: in a dense and concise prose, it gives formidable psychological and existential depth to unforgettable characters, without ever neglecting the tension that keeps the reader glued every minute of that fateful day. I enjoyed the unusual narrative structure of this novel—I felt like a detective trying to piece together the narrator‘s story. George Webb is a private detective, and over the course of one day he explains different parts of his past. Putting it all together with his present is a little confusing but also mesmerizing. #1001books #reading1001

Based on the blurb, I didn‘t necessarily expect to enjoy this book, but it surprised me. It‘s told in an introspective way completely from the perspective of George, a private detective. The back and forth in time and various stories of George‘s life kept me constantly curious to know more about what happened.

I‘m headed out the door this morning with my coffee and an audiobook. I wasn‘t sure what to expect from the reviews I‘ve seen of this book, but I‘m enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Reading this odd, voyeuristic novel as BOTM in #Reading1001 group on Goodreads. #1001books #audiobook
