Mehso-so

There are some really good thoughts presented in this book. There is also a lot of filler. The book is slow to get going and slow to conclude and it can feel a bit unfocused at times. I found the middle chapters to be the most compelling. I did not always agree with the author's philosophies, but it does contain some valuable information and perspectives.

Bailedbailed

This book isn't bad, and is probably life changing for most. The thing is though, I read almost exclusively Christian Feminist Non-Fiction and James here doesn't write about anything I don't know or haven't read before. I'm going to Bail on this one only because I'm struggling to find an interest in any chapter since I've read similar 80 million times.

BookishMarginalia I fully support the #bookbail - Life is too short. 😊 8y
maximoffs @BookishMarginalia I usually say that life is too short for bad books but this book wasn't even really bad! 8y
readinginthedark I haven't even been able to find much feminist Christian non-fiction, so I'd love to hear some suggestions! 8y

WordWaller @readinginthedark have you tried Rachel Held Evans? I haven't read her books yet but her blog is pretty good when I happen to stumble upon it 8y
maximoffs @readinginthedark Anything by Sarah Bessey, specifically Jesus Feminist, A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans are great places to start! 8y
WordWaller @steverogers I've been meaning to for ages! But I think I wanna start with her other one about the church since it would apply more directly to my life right now 8y
readinginthedark @WordWaller I haven't, thanks! 8y
readinginthedark @steverogers Thanks for the suggestions! 8y

"Here is the point. The Bible doesn't merely leave the door ajar for some women to become leaders; it actually makes a rather emphatic case that God expects his daughters to be leaders."

ElizabethAndino That's why I love my church!!! 8y

GinaAnderson Right on. 8y
maximoffs @GinaAnderson Christian Feminism is my favorite kind of Christian book to read to be honest 8y
GinaAnderson I love this. Too often this message gets lost. I'm not religious but my father-in-law was a pastor who preached this. Just one of the many reasons I loved him and miss him. 8y

LauraBeth Have you read Jesus Feminist by Sarah Bessey? 8y
maximoffs @GinaAnderson that's wonderful. I love when pastors preach this. It's awesome. @laurabeth yes! She's my favorite ever. I actually have a personal email she wrote me that I cherish. 8y
LauraBeth I have it on my kindle - I need to read it @steverogers 8y
maximoffs @LauraBeth you won't regret it! 8y

"We and our world are broken, that this side of eternity we will drink deeply of that brokenness, and there will be thorns we can't shake off that accompany us to our graves. The world is a mess and so are we. But this is the context in which God is calling his image bearers to kingdom living."

"In hindsight it makes a lot of sense, after all, the Bible isn't an American book. To be honest, the American culture is as far removed from the ancient culture of the Bible as you can get. The message loses its potency and sometimes completely escapes us when read solely through an American lens instead of through the eyes of those who understand the ancient biblical culture."

brennareadsbooks YESSS. Have you read "When Life and Beliefs Collide" by her? It's on my shelf and I'm so excited to start it. 8y
LauraBeth I took a class on the Old Testament at Indiana Wesleyan And this is what our professor taught us. He told us when we read the OT, we have to take off our modern day American goggles and put on ancient ones. 8y
maximoffs @brennareadsbooks I haven't! I only heard of Half the Church because I loved Half the Sky and heard it was kind of the Christian companion 8y
maximoffs @LauraBeth it's sooooo true. I remember I had a pastor who used to preach about that. I always remember, in pretty much every situation, context is everything 8y

Someone needs to stop me from placing holds at the library.

AStoriedSoul A Thousand Nights! ❤️😍 8y
BookFreakOut No no no, because a few dollars here and there in overdue fines (if you're like me) is nothing compared to if you had bought them all! 8y
Bookworm83 I was thinking these same thoughts yesterday as I came home with eight more books. I agree with you @BookFreakOut ...I never have a problem paying my fines. Money well spent! 8y

Library-Belle Try working at a library..... Half my holds are on books that aren't out yet and I am constantly seeing things come in which automatically go into my "to take home" pile 8y
BookishFeminist My dear I think you've come to the wrong place to ask people to stop you, we've only got enablers here lol 🙃 8y
TheNextBook You know what?! I need people to return their libraby books! I have 4 titles on hold for my reader and people wont return books! It's been almost two months! Give me the books already! 😫😫😫😫😫📚📖😒 8y
MrBook 😂😂😂👍🏻 8y
Notafraidofwords Fines at the library never bother me. It's more expensive to pay for the books. 8y
LibrarianRyan I love to see all the library minded people. And amen I know that feeling well @Library-Belle 8y

Pickpick

Sexism pervades our culture, including Christianity. James advocates for women to be treated as the equal members of the church that we are and bravely faces down the church patriarchy, calling for ALL of women's gifts and talents to be appreciated by a male-dominated church. 💯🙌🏻👏🏽 |🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
