pickAn excellent graphic novel! Nina Bunjevac, a Canadian Artist of Serbian origin, deals with her family's history which is as complicated as the 20th Century Serbian/Yugoslavian history. Autobiographical narrative, powerfull story and beautiful black and white drawings.
so-soI was interested in Fatherland because my family came to Canada from Yugoslavia, just as Nina Bunjevac's family did. I was interested in Bunjevac's personal story, and the history of Yugoslavia is something I have always wanted to learn more about. Parts of it just moved too slowly, parts didn't give enough detail, and sometimes I just wished it was a bit more personal.
"I would do anything you ask but I am too deep in sh*t and cannot get out of it." Frequently on lists of must-read graphic memoirs, this both chronicles and parallels the unfortunate life of her father (who, among many things, is a terrorist) and the unfortunate history of the Balkins (specifically the former Yugoslavia).
