Vernon God Little

Hailed by the critics and lauded by readers for its riotously funny and scathing portrayal of America in an age of trial by media, materialism, and violence, Vernon God Little was an international sensation when it was first published in 2003 and awarded the prestigious Man Booker Prize. The memorable portrait of America is seen through the eyes of a wry, young, protagonist. Fifteen-year-old Vernon narrates the story with a cynical twang and a four-letter barb for each of his townsfolk, a medley of characters. With a plot involving a school shooting and death-row reality TV shows, Pierres effortless prose and dialogue combine to form a novel of postmodern gamesmanship.

All these years later, Vernon God Little still strikes that sweet spot between comedy, tragedy, and incisive social critique. It‘s not really a novel about a school shooting, it‘s a novel about small towns, about what we see, and what we don‘t see, and the power of group mentality in a crisis for bad as well as good. It‘s great writing and it‘s a great read.

Suet624 I keep thinking I've read this, but I haven't. :( 2y

This book is a SCATHING look at our justice system and our biased, mainstream, sensationalist, reality-tv-obsessed media! The dialogue was so great, I laughed on almost every page! Vernon Little‘s class has been massacred by his best friend (who then turned the gun on himself.) Vernon finds himself in a whirlwind of crazy happenings that end with him being on Death Row. Will the truth come out in time!? 139/1,001 #1001Books

vivastory I've been meaning to read this one for awhile now 7y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory It‘s a good read! The majority of the characters are unlikable af, but I enjoy black humor and it‘s just so zany! It‘s also a little sad that you can see something like this actually happen... 7y
vivastory I love zany & black humor. It sounds like a great satire! 7y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory Yes! If you go into it knowing it‘s a satire, I think you appreciate it more! 7y

#longtitles "Vernon God Little: a 21st century comedy in the presence of death" Holden-Caufield-like narrator caught in aftermath of school shooting. "I sit waiting between shafts of light from a row of doorways, naked except for my shoes & Thursdays underwear. Looks like I'm the first one they rounded up so far. I ain't in trouble, don't get me wrong. I didn't have anything to do with Tuesday. Still you wouldn't want to be here today" #booktober

A wild ride of a read with a crazy, dark and fiendishly funny plot and cast of characters. So much of this books brilliance is found in moments; the vulgar way a character eats something says everything before they've said a word. I also love Vernon who often feels like a more contemporary Holden Caulfield with a thick southern accent. Brilliant fun!
