When James Mycroft drags Rachel Watts off on a night mission to the Melbourne Zoo, the last thing she expects to find is the mutilated body of Homeless Dave, one of Mycroft's numerous eccentric friends. But Mycroft's passion for forensics leads him to realize that something about the scene isn't right--and he wants Watts to help him investigate the murder. While Watts battles her attraction to bad-boy Mycroft, he's busy getting himself expelled and clashing with the police, becoming murder suspect number one. When Watts and Mycroft unknowingly reveal too much to the cold-blooded killer, they find themselves in the lion's den--literally. A trip to the zoo will never have quite the same meaning to Rachel Watts again... From the Hardcover edition.

This was a good ‘teen‘ mystery. Mycroft and Watts (yes, there are lots of Sherlock Holmes references) discover a dead body of a homeless man, they had befriended, outside Melbourne Zoo. They solve the mystery and fall in love along the way. Teens and young adults will enjoy this one. I thought it was OK.

Another damn nor‘easter so another #snowday. This one isn‘t too bad, and I MIGHT have been able to get in to work, but the governor says stay home if you can and I cleared the day already. So here I sit with the first few of a huge stack of YA books I checked out since I‘m way too depressed.

TheBookDream I haven‘t seen a plow but it‘s JUST starting to pick up. It‘s a very strange storm. Also, just got word one of my co-workers got stuck trying to get to work (the office is on a hill) so I guess it was good to clear my schedule and stay home. Where are you? I‘m in south eastern-ish CT 7y

If Veronica Mars is not allowed, then I pick Mycroft and Watts. Between Mycroft‘s genius and Watts‘ sensibility, I‘m in good hands. #BooksToTheRescue

the.bookish.valkyrie I haven't heard about this book before! It sounds fantastic! Stacked! 📚💕 7y

While this is touted as the Sherlock next door you could slip out the tenuous Sherlock link and it would have been equally fantastic. An excellent read with great plot, writing and characters. I did work out the killer and method, but had a lot of fun reading the characters get there too. Mycroft and Watts had a lot of chemistry and I enjoyed their developing relationship. Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

MarriedtoMrT I thought the second book was even stronger. Enjoy! 8y
Deebee @MarriedtoMrT oh yay! I've just downloaded it so that's good to know 😆 8y

My Secret Santa did pretty well fulfilling my wish for a book that is about teenagers solving crime (with bonus Sherlock Holmes references) and is also a #LoveOzYa title...

I think you'd probably enjoy this @Carol (the US cover is much cooler than this one, although I do appreciate seeing Flinders Street Railway on a book cover)

#SecretSantaBookSwap

Chachic I've heard good things about Ellie Marney's books! 8y
MarriedtoMrT I love this series! Book 2 is my favorite but book 1 is a really great start. 8y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Carol, I've read this ages ago but should probably reread and then finish the trilogy! Maybe my January goal along with 8y
MarriedtoMrT Trouble is also fabulous and much more light-hearted. 8y

Between the slow beginning, unfamiliar idioms that I could only figure out from context clues half of the time, double quotes inside single quotes, and straight-up weird descriptions like "very black women whose clothes were like a sexy rainbow," this book was not my cup of tea. Read if you like mildly entertaining murder mysteries, typical bad boys with troubled pasts, and "just friends" realizing they'd rather make out.

Not to mention that seeing double quotes inside single quotes makes my brain want to explode. Is this an Aussie thing?

Tikabelle IDK if it's an Australian proofing thing but it would also make me nuts. Between the quotes and the weird exoticism, maybe I'll skip this one. 8y
Sharanya I do know that in the UK it's single quotes first, then double. I guess that's how they do it in Australia too? Although the rest of this book in general is making me go ❓❓❓ 8y
ericalynnb Also can we take a second to acknowledge the stigmatization of medication for mental health. Mycroft clearly needs help. He can get it and still retain what makes him unique. 8y

BooksTeasAndBookishThings Probably another thing Webster decided to do to be anti-English in our language... 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Switching and doing double quotes first, I mean. I would imagine this is actually the true form. 8y
skullsinthesea Oh man, I didn't even catch THAT part of the problems in this book. Sigh. 8y
BookNerdBritt @ericalynnb Yes! If you have a physical ailment, no one would judge you for going to the doctor to get it treated. Mental health should be the same. 8y
SeeStephWrite Oh wow. I'm glad I didn't get to that part. Ugggggh. 8y
BookNerdBritt @SeeStephWrite Did you DNF? Wish I had, haha. 8y
SeeStephWrite Yeah, I wasn't getting into it, and no one seemed thrilled, so I bailed. Sounds like I made the right choice 😝 8y

On the train back from the #nationalbookfestival and we have to stop to let the bridge up for this big ol' boat! My station and patiently waiting husband are right one the other side. 😟😑☺ Guess I get a little extra reading time.

Graciouswarriorprincess I hope that you liked the National Book festival. I had a blast yesterday! 8y
beaniebankbeth I had an amazing time! I was sad it was only one day though, so as many authors as I saw, I had to miss out on so many more. 😔 8y

I always love a good Sherlock story, and the added sexual tension between these two really kicked it up a notch!
