panFinally finished this book after having to drag myself through it. I kept thinking that things would pick up after I got about halfway through, I finally realized it would never pick up. Too much extra information and side stories about characters who I could not care less about. The last 40 pages were the best part of the book and I loved the way it ended. Too bad it was a bore.
so-soWhen her father loses the proceeds from the sale of a goldmine, as well as his sanity, his business partner (who is Dulcy‘s abusive ex-fiancé) summons Dulcy to care for her father and to search his journals for a clue about the missing money.
Walton dies before anyone can find the money and Dulcy fears that she will never escape Victor‘s clutches. She decides to fake her own death and start a new life as a young widow.
pickThis was a sloooow character-driven plot, but I liked it. I liked Dulcy even with (because of?) her flaws. I also like that it was small town gossip, beautifully written. Also, I appreciated that the author didn‘t try to pretend there was no diversity in Montana at the turn of the 20th century. 3.5/5 stars

pickA little slow to start, but great writing and a look at life in Montana in the early 1900s. This is about a young woman dealing with the death of her eccentric father and running from an abusive ex-fiancé. There is a lot about her deceased father and his prolonged illness with syphilis. Also, a lot about malaria contracted in foreign wars. Thank goodness for modern medicine! A good look at a strong, intelligent woman trying to escape her past.

pick⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ loved this book. The female protagonist is well written. Great storyline and loved all the detailed characters.
pickDulcy is a magnificent, complicated protagonist and the supporting cast are, for the most part, idiosyncratic in all kinds of interesting ways. It's also dryly funny and sharp, which was a great surprise. My main complaint is that the story itself feels glossed in an odd way, like the emotional beats were muffled in the prose. Still, it was a good read, enough to make it a solid pick.
pick#litsypartyofone I was gripped by this book- the prose is so good and the story is unique. Much of it is difficult to read dealing as it does with the effects of syphilis, unrepentant abusers and violence- trigger warnings all over the place. A satisfying ending and an intelligent female protagonist. I give it 4 stars and would recommend- keeping all the above in mind.

Finally my library hold arrived. This book begins with a cool black and white picture of New York. Flipping through I note all chapters begin with vintage photos- identified as public domain from various collections- with the exception of one by Pablo Picasso used under license- can't wait to find out how these fit the story- off I go!!!
Read the description and I think you'll agree - this one's going to be good!🤓By the way, that blurry image isn't my doing, it's the cover IRL.
