4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Spiced with stories of family and friends, sweetened by memories of holidays and celebratory meals, Brown Sugar is a slice of life from African American communities across the country. In this collection of recipes and tales, Joyce White passes along generations of kitchen wisdom and dessert favorites, as well as fresh and creative variations on classic sweets. From the wedding reception-ready Coconut Peach lake to the simple joy of Gingered Tropical Fruits, these are desserts for any occasion. The flavors are comforting and festive, as are the many poignant stories that White shares. A sublime Sweet Potato Cheesecake is passed along from a hardworking mother in California, while Three Sisters Coconut Pie is White's composite of three good friends' favorite pie recipes, each reflecting their unique backgrounds. The results are at once innovative and familiar. Whether you are looking to make the perfect Lemon Meringue Pie or to preserve summer fruit, these recipes will satisfy your sweet tooth and add heirloom-quality recipes to your collection. The complex flavors of Star Anise Peach Ice Cream and West Indian Christmas Cake are within reach of any home cook, thanks to White's masterful guidance and the tips and cook's secrets that she provides. White's recipes encourage creativity, offering suggestions for variations as well as a solid foundation for your own soul-inspired sweets. Brown Sugar is warm, memorable, and universal, and you will be eager to share its recipes and stories, to create your own sweet memories.

I had a serious workout shovelling foot-deep snow this morning. Don‘t romanticize the stuff, people. Yeah, I know you think it‘s pretty, but it‘s crap when you‘ve actually gotta deal with it.

Now I‘m doing the tea-and-cookies thing while I try to decide what to make for Thanksgiving on Monday. I think it‘s finally time to try molasses lace cookies, though butternut squash pie also sounds like a tasty alternative to pumpkin. Hmmm.

rachelm Butternut is an awesome alternative. Works so well. 5y
Kimberlone Wow, you‘ve already got snow?! It‘s getting pretty cold where I live but the snow hasn‘t reached the bottom of the mountains yet 5y
xicanti @rachelm I bought a goodly amount on my last shopping trip, too! 5y

xicanti @Kimberlone we had a major blizzard that lasted all through Thursday and Friday, and it‘s supposed to resurge for at least one more day before things warm up again. I‘m not impressed. It‘s WAY too early. 5y
Kimberlone @xicanti every morning this week I‘ve wondered if we are going to have a light dusting, but it is way to early for a blizzard anywhere! 5y
xicanti @Kimberlone it seems to be sweeping across Canada, though most places got less than we did here in MB. Boo. 😑 5y
mreads Cute cookies 5y
xicanti @mreads thanks! I made a whole bunch of bats, plus some pumpkins, witches, and ghosts. Most of them have coloured lemon icing. 5y

I haven‘t done a #wondrouswednesday in ages.

1. Characters are the most important element. They‘ve gotta move me. I also react to clever use of (or rejection of) tropes and to really cool set dressings.

2. I like Funko Pops.

3. Joyce White‘s BROWN SUGAR is the very best.

4. Don‘t make me choose between Katherena Vermette and Vivek Shraya.

5. Y‘all know tagging people makes me anxious.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I intentionally avoided Funko Pops for ages because I knew I would go full-on Mr. Toad with them, but my wife got me the !0th Doctor for Christmas and then my kiddo decided I needed the Crystal Gems from Steven Universe for my birthday. So I can be content with that. I probably do need the 2nd Doctor though. And the 8th... 6y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I stick to characters I really, really love when I buy brand new Funko Pops, but sometimes I grab random cool ones when I see them used. 6y

Joyce White's BROWN SUGAR is my favourite cookbook. I turn to White whenever someone in my life asks for a baked good with a particular vibe, and she always comes through. The stories she tells to introduce each recipe are great, too.

And yet, I never come across other bakers who've used this wonderful cookbook. It definitely #needsmorelove. #anditsaugust

alanacristin Sounds most excellent! Thanks for sharing 😃🍞🍩🍰 7y

Tonight I cooked up a pan of my favourite brownies from my favourite dessert cookbook. Some of them are headed for my grandma since she requested brownies for belated Mother's Day, but some of them are going into my belly as soon as the topping's set.
